Well, at least they’re not sending over terrorists

You know, somebody needs to tell this Michael Kirby fellow at the U.S. embassy (assuming he doesn’t read this blog) that the whole point behind immigration is to encourage skilled professionals to come to the United States, not discourage it. Heck, you gotta figure if there’s any sector of the American economy that could use the infusion of new, hardworking talent to shake things up, this is it.

    Find this halarious,

When there are 10,000 wetbacks crashing our Southern Border every day, and half the California’s prison population is made of Illegal criminals and child molesters:

I guess he doesn’t mind criminals entering our Country Illegally. He only have problems with people who get here legally. Maybe they should try the Souther Border with names like Gonzales.

It’s astonishing that Kirby would be permitted to make such a remark - and I’m sure he didn’t do it on a detour & frolic - that is not only undiplomatic, but very in your face to an ethnic group that is pathologically concerned with “face”. I wonder if USTR is being as blunt in the FTA talks.

Origami, I teach ‘wetback’ children. They are respectful to their teachers and fellow students and work hard. Their parents, who toil long hours in two and three jobs, are often illiterate but they value their children’s education and come to every conference. These people endured days of hardship in the hot, dry desert, and the women risked being raped in order to get here because they were desperately poor and only sought better lives for themselves and their children. Since you have such a problem with ‘wetbacks,’ I hope you are a farmer who grows all your own produce and raises and slaughters your own meat because undocumented workers from Mexico and Central American comprise a significant portion of our agricultural labor force, and they are one reason why we pay only about 11% of our disposible income for food, compared with 18% in Europe.

    - would the continent that enslaved Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sudan, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya and Madagascar please refrain from slavery? Would the European continent stop slavery on it’s doorstep. Islam = slavery in Africa, that is all.

I’m certainly NOT morally objectionable to prostitution. But just like drug dealing, prostitution does lead to more serious crimes in the community and a breakdown of the moral fabric of society.

I think most Americans believe that anyone that is willing to work hard, and has decent family values is welcome to the U.S. Bring us your poor, your tired, and your hungry, even your prostitutes, but not your criminals like Castro did.

Do you know why Mexicans are called “wetbacks”? Their backs would appear wet to observers on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande River. I could think of quite a bit more harsh of name to call someone. Personally, I like Eric Cartman’s term for Mexicans, “taco benders”. Hot sauce please with my tacos.

Like I said earlier, I think most Americans welcome Mexicans to the U.S. due to their work ethic, family and reglious values. Mexicans work as hard, if not harder than most of the ethnic groups I’ve aware of that have emigrated to the U.S.

What I find funny is that the negro population in the States is extremely opposed to Hispanics becoming citizens, because it would make them the a smaller minority, and certainly NOT the majority minority ethnic class any longer. In fact, since the whole “illegal worker” issue has been raised during these last months, African-American and Hispanic tensions have drastically increased, particularly in the prison environment. Beware welfare recipients, Hispanics are coming to replace you. *giggle*

That’s all well and good, but maybe if they’d work that hard in Mexico itself, they could build up that country and we wouldn’t have such an immigration problem.

Why is it that when someone speaks against illegal immigrants that they are somehow against all immigrants? That’s what I’m seeing here. And further, why is the US castigated for trying to secure its own borders? If the US had a better grip on its borders the criminals who are supposedly filling up our prisons would be reduced and the illegal immigrants who come simply for a better life would have a far less dangerous trip. Personally I think this plan of Bush’s should have been done 20 years ago. The “illegals” here now would mostly have gotten in anyway as guest workers, wouldn’t have had to endure abuse from their employers and would have an easier time going home if they wanted to. Anyhoo, their presence is de facto and the most prudent way of dealing with them is Bush’s plan. This (there actually) is a land of immigrants and always will be so we should treat them as neighbors not as outcasts.

Meanwhile, back at the house of Usher, Mr. Hans Castorp again you speak from your arrogant classroom perspective of something you know nothing about. The word wetback is certainly derogatory…but it hasn’t always been and it doesn’t carry the same negative connotation in all communities. Largely it’s used to refer to anyone Latino, hence the racist taint, but it’s also used by other Latinos to refer to Mexicans, and it’s also used by some Mexicans to refer to other Mexicans who took the illegal route in getting across. Sonagi had a great response to Origami’s use of the word while you could only come up with “cockroach.” l’Angleterre à genoux

Wouldnt it be great if we could reduce all our social problems to a simple cost/benefit analysis?

Instead of trying to stem the tide of illegal immigrants at the border like the Minitumen morons, why not send the police out to enforce labor laws, and fine the companies and farms that employ illegal workers? It seems to me that it would be a much simpler thing (as well as cheaper for the taxpayer) to hire enough federal employees to head out and inspect worker documentation at Wal-Marts and various farms than it would be to build a big wall to keep out all the Mexicans. After all, if there ceased to be an economic advantage to employing illegal aliens, wouldn’t that mean that companies would resort to hiring legal aliens or even (gasp) Americans to fill the positions currently filled by undocumented Mexicans? And if the jobs dried up, then wouldn’t that do a lot more to stem the tide of illegal immigrants to the USA than a wall? If you really want to do something to help stem the tide of illegal immigration into America, then don’t buy anything from any company that employs illegal immigrants, get your friends and family to do the same, and make sure the companies know it. Sure, the price of American-grown produce will probably go up, but we can always stay competitive by simply instituting farm subsidies that might even end up costing less than 100 billion dollars — who knows?

Zonath, I’ve wondered myself why the government doesn’t focus more on the employers rather than the employees…I don’t get it. If they really want to make illegal labor stop, then make it unprofitable to the employers…So does the government really want it to stop? Maybe big business is more important to them than their citizens security…

I’m of the opinion that the government doesn’t really want to stop illegal immigration, but also doesn’t want to be seen as not doing anything to stop it. So, they pick a relatively ineffective method to show Joe America that they are indeed doing something, even while making sure that they’re not hurting the pocketbooks of their friends in the farming lobbies, the retail lobbies, etc… In other words, they know that they’re not really doing anything substantive, but at least when they ‘fail’ they have something to point to in order to show the constituency that at least they ‘tried’.

Personally I think Bush’s plan is a great one…the only great thing he has ever come up with perhaps. I just don’t think it stands any chance of passing the bullwarks of Congress. We are going to have even bigger problems down the road if we can’t recognize the people we ought to be friendly towards in order to distinguish them from the real creeps we need to keep out. Maintaining the status quo is just pissing on everybody…Citizens, Legals, Illegals.

The U.S. government has tried that. Since the IRCA came into force in 1986, employers are required at the time of hiring to confirm the employee’s citizenship status and are subject to fines, with some employers having been fined millions of dollars for having hired illegal aliens.

Mexico has absolutely no opportunities for social mobility. If you’re born poor, you die poor, the same goes with the upper class, born rich, you die rich. There is no middle-class in Mexico at all.

The problem is, politically and economically, President Fox of Mexico wants to totally deny any sort of social benefits to its peasantry population, except for the 3% of the population that is in the upper-class which really doesn’t need any assistance. Meanwhile, something like 20 to 40% of all Mexican citizens are residing in the U.S. either legally or illegally, while the U.S. taxpayers foot the bill for their social services and healthcare. This is not to say that Mexicans are the only culprits in the illegal immigration matter, but they do make up the vast majoritiy of “illegals” in the U.S.

In no way, shape or form can Mexico be considered a “poor” country. Inevitably, this social inbalance will most likely lead to a revolution in Mexico, and probably one in China too in the very near future, as the US more closely scrutinizes its trade and immigration policies.

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, if people are uneducated and unwilling to fight for their rights, others will continue to exploit and profit from their labor.

    dogbertt & Zonath:

Also, the U.S. government has focused on the illegal immigration problem by conducting nationwide raids on businesses over the last few months. However, in every single instance, the government agents have simply processed the illegal workers making sure they don’t have any warrants or criminal records, and then simply released them. In some instances, token fines were handed out to the employers.

With 6 million undocumented workers, obviously the government isn’t trying hard enough to crack down. If Uncle Sam’s spooks can pour through billions of google searches and tens of millions of mobile phone records, one wonders why it’s so easy for 6 million Mexicans and Central Americans to work in plain sight. Let’s just admit that the present system is not working and introduce a guest worker program, which Canada has already done.

For quite some time U.S. employers have had to fax or mail in new employees’ social security numbers. They don’t care if the same number comes up 1,000 times.

I’ve heard the estimated number of “illegals” in the U.S. is above 20 million people. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 50 million .
