in Korean Media, Stupid Foreigner Tricks

Media Today said a funny. They ran a piece today criticizing the Chosun and JoongAng dailies for their silence about recent sexual assaults at two Gyeonggi-do English camps, alleging that their silence was due to business interests the two papers have in the English camp business. Of course, while taking Korea’s conservative dailies to task for failing in their journalistic responsibilities, Media Today decided to print as-is (quoting the press release of a Seongnam civic group umbrella) the original allegation that the Seongnam Camp assault was carried out by a “native speaker” (which, allegedly, it wasn’t) while also failing to note the nationality (Korean) of the English teacher accused in the Ansan assault.

Not that anyone read the story. But it was still pretty cute.

On a related-but-only-slightly note: With Korea experiencing a shortage of native-speaker English instructors, the nation has been forced to deploy Marines to the classroom as English teachers. OK, I’m joking. Well, at least about the forced deployment part. But at a middle school on Ganghwa Island, two ROK Marines—one a former U.S. citizen and the other a long-time Korean expat in the United States, Russia and Germany—are teaching English conversation classes twice a week.

It is a pity that no legal recourse could be taken against these people, just to make a point about slander and lying.

In Korea, there’s no legal protection against libel (and slander, given I’m sure these accusations were told to others)?
