Local election update

I know Andy will probably break down all the scores either later tonight or tomorrow, but just to give you a quick rundown of where we are now, the votes are still being counted, but Yonhap News is already proclaiming Sunday’s local elections to be the worst election defeat suffered by the ruling Uri Party in its short history. The Grand National Party is looking good in at least 11 of 16 mayoral and gubernatorial spots up for grabs, and if things go its way, it may take 13. There’s still a whole lot of votes to be counted, but it looks like Oh Se-hoon will cruise to easy victory for Seoul mayor, and Kim Mun-soo is looking good for Gyeonggi-do governor. The party will likely maintain control of the Incheon mayor’s office as well. With some 20 percent of the vote counted, the GNP’s Park Sung-hyo is ahead by 5 percentage points in the hotly contested Daejeon mayoral race, and it looks like the party will keep Jeju as well, although that race is rather close with an independent who was, at any rate, a member of the GNP.

In more bad news for the Uri Party, it looks like the Democratic Party will win the Gwangju mayoral and Jeollanam-do gubernatorial races. In fact, it seems the only race the Uri Party is likely to win is the Jeollabuk-do gubernatorial race.

But like I said, there are still plenty of votes to be counted, and as they say, it ain’t over until it’s over.

Wow, it is really great to see the Dear Leader’s Stooges get their asses kicked. Of course the Dear Leader’s plan was always to have Uri destabilise the South Korean economy and get rid of Big Nose. He has been partially successful as the departure of Walmart, Carrefour and a large part of USFK. However it seems the declining economic fortunes of the rank and file has exposed the truth in the matter, hence the Dear Leader’s defeat today.
