Yeah, but you first

Tell me you, too, saw the irony in this:

“What the president has said all along is that he wants to make sure that people who become American citizens have a command of the English language,” Snow said. “It’s as simple as that.”

What? I don’t see no irony. Our President simply ask the question, “Is our children learning?”

If the Prez can redefine laws passed by the U.S. Congress he can easily redefine the laws of English grammar.

“Is our children learning” is now proper English and “strategery” is a word. Webster’s dictionary and Microsoft’s spell/grammar check better update or be shut down by the Department of Homeland inSecurity.

It’s definitely possible to get by with simply pointing and grunting to express yourself. And, we’re not speaking about fluency by any means, just a basic command of English would go a far, far way. The fact of the matter is, at least in America, the more easily you can communicate your ideas in English to others, the more opportunities you and your children have available.

At one time, there was a serious debate to determine if English or German ought to be the ‘official’ language here in the U.S. Americans knowing just a single language, certainly isn’t going to assure our competitiveness in the future. Look at any Asian or European country, children learn several languages before adulthood.

Moreover, anyone that speaks English fluently, understands that English isn’t a perfect language by any stretch of the imagination. However, without question English is the standard language of choice for international business communication, and definitely better than being limited to pointing and grunting.

Amazing, to think people should learn English in America. Makes me feel bad for six years on the ROK and not learning Korean

Maybe the shrub could set an example by learning English himself.

“That’s George Washington, the first president, of course. The interesting thing about him is that I read three—three or four books about him last year. Isn’t that interesting?”—Bush showing German newspaper reporter Kai Diekmann the Oval Office, Washington, D.C., May 5, 2006
