Candidate filing started yesterday and we found out a few things about them.
For example Kang Kum-sil is in debt while her main opponent, Oh Se-hoon is sitting pretty:
There was a large difference in the amount of the candidate’s assets. While candidate Kang owed 418.12 million won, candidate Oh has 3.6 billion won in assets, candidate Park 1.7 billion won and People First Party (PFP) Yim Ung-kyun reported 380 million won in assets.
So, who are the Daddy Warbucks of the race?
Of all the registered candidates that day, the wealthiest candidate was incumbent Taean-gun Administrator Jin Tae-gu, who reported his total assets at 22.15 billion won.
Gyeongbuk Province Mungyeong City mayor candidate Park In-won (an independent) followed in second with 20.09 billion won, Uri Party Seoul Mapo-gu administrator candidate Kim Chung-hyun was third with 11.93 billion won.
(Emphasis added, that is about $20 million) It is nice to see that somebody in Mungyeong has money. For those not in the know, Mungyeong was a mining center until the mines closed in the early 1990s. The area has been making a bit of a comeback lately with tourism.
For those of you locked in Seoul, I highly recommend that you head down to Mungyeong sometime and see the ‘real’ Korea.

Mungyeong is a nice place… I’ve been to the provincial park there a couple of times, and even taken a tour of the sham ‘folk village’ they have there (it’s actually a TV set - forget which famous show was filmed there.) It’s a fun place.
The Provincial Park there has excellent hiking, particularly up to Shinseon-bong [Spirit-Immortal Peak].
