English-language Korean blogger

Mike Hurt (a.k.a. the Metropolitician) wrote me the other day about a blog written by one of his students, shyAcBaRi. Mike thought the blog would be of interest to the English K-blogging community, noting that it was “one of the few English blogs written by Korean nationals, moreover being one written by a kid who provides an insider perspective on the other side of the profession that many foreigners find themselves practicing here in Korea.” Give the site a look and adjust your links accordingly.

I feel sorry for these Korean students studying for American Advanced Placement exams. All they do is allow you to save some money by receiving college credit and free up some space for electives. However, that is a dying trend, especially in the top-tiered schools. Not only are the Ivy league schools not allowing AP scores to establish course credit on their own, AP scores are being downgraded in their impact on the overall admissions process (http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-03-20-ap-main_x.htm).

I’m surprised Koreans speak English so poorly, compared to other Asian nations. But, when you have native-Korean English teachers that can’t speak “English” in both junior and high schools, I guess it’s not terribly surprising.
