With some 60 activists looking at criminal charges related to recent violent demonstrations in Pyeongtaek, Major General Park Gyeong-seo, who is heading the preparations for the U.S. base relocation, said the Army plans to apply military law to anyone caught sneaking into the “military zone” now ringed by barbed wire, i.e., Daechu-ri. This means that even civilians will see the inside of a court-martial if they are caught anywhere in Daechu-ri.
According to Article 69 of Korea’s current Military Law, anyone who damages or otherwise harms the utility of military facilities is subject to two years or more in the pen.
He also said soldiers in Pyeongtaek would be issued police clubs for self-defense, but stressed that the military is not considering the deployment of armed troops to the battlefield.
