MUST WATCH/LISTEN!!!

Nathan posts only the best in Mongolian hip-hop, and what’s more, he’s got a link to an absolutely MUST HEAR cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” done by Tuvan band Yat-kha—complete with throat singing!

Ian Curtis always had a strange voice, I suppose it’s suited in a way for throat singing.

The bigger question for me is how does a Republican from Long Island remember Joy Division?

Yat-kha sounds like Tom Waits after a quart of bourbon and a carton of Luckies.

The Republican from Long Island is in the right age bracket to remember Joy Division since he’s a year younger than I.

I kind of like the cover of Motorhead’s Orgasmotron as well. I might have to buy the whole album so I can hear the covers of Kraftwerk, Iron Butterfly, and Hank Williams.

Agreed on Orgasmatron. I’ve had it on the old iPod for about a year now.

Anyhow, I met Tatar a couple of years ago and had a decent time hanging out and drinking beer. Seems like everyone in UB under 25 is in a hiphop band (over 25, they are in a rock band).

Really, it’s kind of depressing going to places like Ulaanbaatar that have less than a million people and very little money, but have a much better music scene than this 20-million-person hub that is home to Time cover-boy Rain.

BTW, the former bassist of Joy Division will be DJing tomorrow at M2.

I’ve never been to UB, but the Mongolians here in China (who are generally the children of businessmen and officials) match up with Haisan’s description. They’re very much into hip hop, breakdancing, and even old school beatbox. And I did notice that unlike the Koreans who come to China and mimic hip hop fashions and the like, Mongolians tend to take it much more seriously, living and breathing a version of hip hop culture with a Mongol twist.

Matthew, all Central Asians are much more serious about keeping it real.

Clearly, Nathan, the steppes are the South Central LA of Asia.

is this the same thing as the New Order appearance?

Yes, Peter Hook, the bassist in question, was also, and more famously, the bassist in New Order.

What a bunch of “I-want-in” hearsay crap. Save your generalizations for bar fodder.
