Just checked in and, as far as I can tell, Dokdo is still Korea’s ddang. I’ll keep checking every ten minutes or so just to make sure though.
Would you happen to know where the camera is located? You can hear plenty of voices.
I must admit it is kind of cool.
i won’t be happy until they set up a hotline i can call as soon as i see the enemy coming over the webcam. 114 for information, 119 for emergencies, 113 for spies… What would be a good number for the Dokdo Observation Hotline (DOH!)?
Judging from the sounds, I take it the camera is located at the Dokdo Coast Guard base guarding the islets.
From one of the earlier views, it appeared to be situated on the East rock, looking west, although I could be wrong… I suppose that would make the most sense, since the outpost is on the East rock.
It also vaguely disturbs me that so many sea birds are allowed to deposit their ddong on Korea’s ddang. Something should be done (ddone?) about this.
I find it reassuring that millions of Dokdo Defenders will be able to keep an eye on the islands to make sure them shifty Japanese doesn’t try to steal them, or anything. HOLY CRAP, THERE’S ONE NOW! Oh wait…. that was just a distant ocean wave.
Of course, I’m also incredibly happy that Daum is so willing to exploit nationalist sentiments to drum up traffic for their web portal. Heaven knows Korean business hasn’t done enough to completely milk the Dokdo issue yet.
With the speakers on it sounds exactly like everywhere else in Korea — jackhammers and power tools clattering away, and ignorant workmen shouting at each other oblivious to the existence of others (watching by webcam). Yep, Dokdo must be Korea’s land after all!

Isn’t that ninjas scaling the lighthouse, cleverly signaling to each other in seagull speak? Where’s the alarm button! WHAT GOOD IS THIS CAMERA IF WE CAN’T PUNCH AN ALARM BUTTON!!! OH, THE HUMANITY!!! Oops, just some seagulls mating. Nevermind.
the whole idea of the webcam reminded me of something equally strange. in my memory, it was right around just after 9/11 when an American security expert suggested that a whole bunch of webcams should be installed all over the country. the idea was that there were never going to be enough people to patrol the border and the nuclear reactors and all the other places that needed to be watched over. so, the webcams would be set up and their feeds broadcast over the Internet. anyone with time on their hands could “patrol” the sites and call an emergency number if/when they saw something fishy.
i’m starting to work on this idea for a book about silly ideas and their cultural permutations.
I was just thinking: Is this good opsec? Those dastardly sandal-wearing goldfish tenders could use this webcam to gather a heck of a lot of intel, eh?
I think I just saw a couple of squadrons of Ahn Sang-gyu’s bees flying in formation!
i think that all the construction sounds must be the other web portals hooking up their own webcams. we should be able to switch from camera to camera and see everything soon.
