And speaking of degrading local women…

kimchigirl.jpgThe Korean Internet Safety Commission handed down a warning to a porn site, Kimchi Girl, for a number of violations of Korean cyber ethics regulations. The site, which not only posted photos of nekkid women (not to mention used an unauthorized photo of Jun Ji-hyun on its front page), was accused of disparaging Korean women, going as far as to use the term, “kimchi slut.” The site was reported to the commission in December by a diligent netizen who noticed it was linked to, you guessed it, English Spectrum. The site was run by a 28-year-old “Dman Scott,” who said he lived in Seoul. The netizen who called it in said Scott “appeared to be a low-quality native-speaking English teacher.” A commission official said, “We demanded that the site make changes because it disparaged Korean women and contained sexual content… We have yet to determine if the site is connected to English Spectrum.” He also said, “The site’s server is in Korea and is part of KT’s network, so we’ll find the operator through cooperation with KT… We cannot rule out that a member of English Spectrum is connected to the website, and because the degree to which Korean women are disparaged on the site is serious, we will investigate the concrete facts of the matter.”
An English Spectrum official said it seems one of its members placed a link to the problematic porn site on their bulletin board without their knowledge.
I was wondering where I had heard of the site before, and then I remembered—Bluejives had made a note of it.
For what it’s worth, the site no longer appears to be up, but you can see some of Dman Scott’s “work” here.
Now, if I might offer a word of advice to Mr. Scott, it’s that if you’re going to operate a porn site, especially one that degrades Korean women, you gotta do what the Koreans do (see this NOT-WORK-SAFE list, which includes the rather colorfully named “KBitch.com”)—use a server overseas, preferably the United States.

There needs to be a higher standard for hiring English teachers.

We have the same problem of disconnect between school boards and students in Malaysia. Many English schools will hire even highly unmotivated lazy teachers just because they have blonde hair. Many students believed that local Malaysians teach them English better than these ang mohs. The local teachers understand the difficulty in locals learning the language.

However, the school boards still hire foreigners for publicity and status. Its an outright discrimination. Local English taechers with graduate degrees are not treated and sometimes even considered inferior to foreigners who have blonde hair but no paper qualifications.

I was taught by these ang mohs at one time because someone else paid for it and I had to attend. I remember I used to get into many disagreement with these foreign teaches as a student. Once, an English teacher was lecturing us about the rule of law, and I quoted the Rodney King incident in Los Angeles as an example of no rule of law in the United States where a tape clearly showed he was beaten. The female teacher got really emotional and protective of her country.

all you need to teach English is to have used English pretty much all your life. You may not benefit as much from rules of grammer, but that’s all you really need. Case in point. How do children pick up a language in countries where they don’t have schools? From their parents who’ve used the language all their lives.

    wjk,

That’s not comparing apples to apples. Because adults or old children are not learning this language as their first langauge, the brain has been wired such that it needs to logically decipher the language machanics. Case in point: A child born blind will be able to adapt his hearings to be more sensitive. But an adult who goes blind will not be able to do so well. This is why the teaching of English as a 2nd language is better suited for those who had been through the process themselves.

the idea that the blind develop better hearing is a myth.

some may point to the comic book character Daredevil as support, but, remember, he was soaked in chemical waste that made him blind and heightened his other senses. being blind didn’t improve his hearing, chemical waste did.

and how did a post about a porno site become a discussion about teaching english?

i think the answer to your question is no. but, you’r setting the bar pretty high for the koreans: making sure that nothing bad gets said about anyone on the internet.

in the end, they can only do so much, and only when they get direct complaints.

that said, it would be nice to see someone in a position to do something come out and tell the room salons to stop putting pictures of white horses on those little cards that get stuck to cars.

M_fan, you don’t seem to have any clue really about Mahathir, other than some anti-western sound bites that seemingly correspond to your own. You are not Malaysian, nor to you have much knowledge of the place. Do not drop Malaysian slang in, which is not even Malay talk, but actually Hokkien Chinese and has it origins more in the hawker stands of Singapore.

Malaysia does not hire foreign English teachers, especially the state schools and you will only find them in the International Schools and 1 or 2 exclusive private schools. Malays did use English as the official language until very recently, 1970s; they had the British school system; so even know they took a different course for a period of time and there are groups that had other influences; there is still a core background in English that never died and generations who are very capable of expressing themselves in English. You will also find in Malaysia, people who have experienced the periods and regard the Malay discourse using English to be firmly based in logic and rational dialogue; but Malay internal discourse in Bahasa to be based somewhere entirely different.

Don’t come on here insulting Malaysia by claiming to be one.

Please check with your friends at MARA to see if they still contract with foreign english teachers. Pergi cek ngan kekawan ko kat MARA pasal cikgu english.

Also, you cannot call me anti Western unless you call those who criticize Asians to be anti-Asians. Most of my anti-Western remarks are made to enlighten and broaden original criticisms levied by the “anti-Asians” to show them that their observations are also true in Western societies.

And if they are unwarranted, I am only saying so to help Westerners better themselves. So I cannot be “anti”.

The people in this blog complain about racism all the time. Let’s look at another side of the coin. Malaysian doctors facing “racism” in Britain. I wonder if English teachers in Korea faces the same job discrimnation as our Malaysian doctors in the UK.

    http://www.thestar.com.my/news.....sec=nation

“KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian doctors working in Britain are losing out in terms of promotions and job opportunities to their European colleagues.

Prof Dr Lokman Sain, the dean of the medical faculty of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) said he recently visited Ireland and found many Malaysian doctors there stuck as junior housemen and denied promotions as priority was given to European Union doctors. “

Q: “I wonder if English teachers in Korea faces the same job discrimnation as our Malaysian doctors in the UK.”

A: Foreign professors in Korea can only be hired as part-time staff, per racist Korean law. Therefore they are ineligible for promotions and other job opportunities, much like Malaysian doctors in the UK. If you want opportunity as a foreigner, go to America.

Anyway, to get back on track, I told the Kimchi Slut webmaster a loooooooong time ago that hosting unrestricted porn, Korean at that, on a Korean webserver was a bad idea. Oh well, guess that *warning* will teach him. LOL.

Oh, and there’s ZERO connection with that site and English Spectrum. It’s funny how they’re trying to link the two. But there may be a connection to Dok-do. :P

Actually, only foreigners with family visas, for example, a spouse of a Korean national, can work part-time. Foreign nationals on F-2 teaching visas must work full-time. I don’t believe Korean law restricts universities from promoting foreign staff. Rather, it is the universities themselves that regard foreign teachers as transient employees. To be fair, most foreign university teachers, whether they hold the title of lecturer or professor, did not have to go through the same rigorous, highly competitive process for local hires.

My bigger issue when I was living in Korea was the lack of a permanent residency visa for foreign nationals not married to Koreans. That is the main reason why I left. I wasn’t willing to continue investing my most productive years in a country that was not willing to offer me long-term stability. I’ve heard that Korea now offers a permanent residency visa. Can anyone confirm this?

    @Mahathir_fan,

Thanks for providing the link. Reading the story, I learned that

” …medical students, in particular, were not returning to work in Malaysia, citing reasons such as lower income, poorer working conditions, longer working hours, less-structured training programmes and lower chances of promotion.”

    and

” there were many areas in local (Malaysian) hospitals which needed vast improvements to woo back those working overseas.

“For example, yesterday I was forced to work for close to 36 consecutive hours, with only 15-minute breaks for meals,” he said.

“I believe the situation in Britain is different as there are labour laws on the maximum number of hours one is allowed to work consecutively. “

Looks like that news story headline screaming about Malaysians being denied job opportunities in Britain is really a thinly veiled disinformation piece aimed at keeping Malaysian doctors from working overseas.

Check out the interview with an English teacher in Korea at Kimchislut.com. ROFL!! A kleptomaniac, English teacher, with a 3rd grade vocabulary describes her theft of purses from Korean women when they get up to dance at clubs.

Marmot’s advise was pretty sound, in that, if you want to operate a Korean/Asian oriented website from Korea simply get a foreign-located webserver.

I’m glad to see that this racist & xenophobic Korean netcitizen really did his research before libeling Kimchislut; Kimchislut is NOT AN ENGLISH TEACHER. I wonder how much effort it would take to publicly expose the crime committed by Koreans in the US? The crime in L.A.’s Koreatown was just rampant when I was unfortunate to live there, I’m sure it’s similar in Chicago, NY and other large cities in the US and elsewhere. What goes around, comes around racist, xenophobic, Korean netcitizens.

Let’s get some of the facts right. The site was free right? so that eliminates that it was a subscription porn site. There were no pornos on the site, no sex scenes or anything. Just mostly naked women of various decent. The photos were uploaded by users to the gallery if you can read Korean, you can see the Naver article about it. So no porn, no hardcore stuff…is this something new? Is it really that news worthy that there were pictures of naked women?

I gather that the hype was about the name and people made it sound like it was degrading korean women, but I recall that the girls were refered to as “kimchi Girl” not slut. And most of the girls were Japanese. I noticed how the Naver news screenshot of kimchislut.com tiled out the faces of no-name girls and made sure that the one clear as day was a big star….

    RE: Max Watson
Yeah you did say that it should be hosted on a different server, but then again it wasn’t porn. I did a clone site (but Japanese theme) with the domian “Sushi____.com …in Korea, which is a paid site and in English…guess where over 75% of the credit card billing addresses are?….yup Korea. and I’m not surprised there have been no complaints and it has about 5000 more hits per day. Oh, it’s on a Korean server too.
    ___________________________________________

Get over it people, don’t let media hype suck you in. I know that most of you that made comments never even saw it, and why did this become a “teacher” topic, there are no teachers involved. Never was, ever….except for the MSN voice interview I did with “Jacky” the psycho chick from Detroit. (it’s still on the site).

As far as the big warning, they asked me to put a ‘warning sign’ on the front page. It wasn’t worth anymore drama so I just took the whole thing down.

So I hope this gives people some kind of closure, or the real-deal on the situation. I learned a lesson in this..that many people are like sheep and whatever the media tells says, many people believe and follow.

    P.S I like this Marmot blog…..

Seriously, though… It sort of disturbs me that English teachers (low-quality ones!) are the automatic scapegoat anytime a Korean woman is “degraded” (by a foreigner, anyhow). Oh, how I long for the old days when the US Army held that honor, and one could rise above the suspicion simply by growing one’s hair past ones ears and staying clear of Yongsan and Itaewon.
