Krispy Kreme goes to Japan

by Robert Koehler on April 17, 2006

Nearly one year after opening up shop in Korea–the Donut Hub of Northeast Asia–Lotte is bringing Krispy Kreme to Japan.
And as Edaily graphically pointed out in a January piece on the firm’s legal fight with Great Circle Family Foods, that Krispy Kreme is a might fine donut.

I picked up a few for the misses and I in Shinchon after teaching a class at Ewha. Yum.

Shouldn’t it be the misses and ME, Andy?

If we’re really going to nitpick, it should also be ‘missus’.

I guess you’re right if he’s married (‘missis’ is also acceptable). I thought he was referring to the unmarried women of Shinchon, plural. Anyway, he should probably get those Ewha girls to learn him some gooder grammar.

Forget the whole thing. It was the DRUGS, the drugs I tell you!

I’ve heard that KKs are just like crack cocaine, so i
refuse to try a single bite, even when somebody brings
a box into the office… Just not gonna go there –
might never come back.

After living in Korea and not eating donuts for over five years a friend gave me one of these Krispy Kremes and I thought they were disgusting.

I tasted like someone deep-fried a sugar bowl. After I ate it I could hear myself getting fatter….

I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’re “disgusting,” but I do agree with those who say that they ain’t all that. Once they’ve cooled, Krispy Kremes aren’t really any better than, say, fresh but cooled Dragon Hill Lodge donuts.

Because of all the hype, I went out of my way in Vegas to go try Krispy Kreme, but they were just okay. At that late hour in Vegas, the KK franchise wasn’t offering the fresh out of the oven donuts that, a few months ago, I finally had a chance to try at Lotte in Myongdong. Those are great, but they are a bit over-sweet, and once they’ve cooled they’re just okay.

The good thing is that getting to Lotte requires a twenty-minute walk, so even if I do get addicted, the exercise and the donut will balance each other out. But for now I’m guessing Lotte is bringing KK to Japan in order to subvert that country by making all its young men too fat and sluggish to take over Tokto.

Krispy Kremes could be a feature item at the Dokdo/Takeshima (or Takeshima/Dokdo) Squid Festival I’m proposing. (Man, my brilliant ideas are making me hungry!)
