Don’t forget Cuba. It also had elections, ergo it’s a democracy.

You know, I once had a professor–flaming lefty, of course–try to explain to me how Cuba was more democratic than the United States.
Ironically enough, given the context of this discussion, he held the Chinese Communist Party in open contempt. (Robert)

Why is it amazing that somebody who supports Cuba would hold the CPC in contempt. God almighty, can't you differentiate any gray between the black and white? Cuba is neither China nor North Korea. Not even close.

Agreed your flamin lefty prof was an idiot to say that Cuba is more democratic than the US but at the same time its dictatorship is nowhere near as bad as Batista's. They are certainly dirt poor due to poor planning, the embargo and cessation of Russian aid) but Cuba can at least boast a highly educated population with universal health care. There's not much food but few poeple are actually starving. Go there and speak with Cubans and you'll see the vast majority really want normal relations with the US and for the embargo to be lifted.

Some Americans really need to stop seeing Cuba as a threat to the US before they lose a potential friend to real threats to democracy like China, just as they did with the Soviet Union. Short memory?

Gosh, pawikirogi, I apologize for having asked you if you like America and Americans. I had thought the question could have been answered without much complication, but after the 'put up or shut up' segment of your post, you were only able to reply with 'well, yes, i am one'.

Actually, I already knew that you were American, and was asking you to describe your feelings for Americans <i>other</i> than yourself - that's why I used 'Americans' rather than 'yourself' in the question above.

Again, I merely asked you a question - a question that you haven't really answered in any depth or substance.

'i don't recall you saying anything supportive of america.'

really, do you recall anything i said against america? and what in your opinion would be supportive of america? put up or shut up, ok? btw, shitting on bush on his he-man supporters will not count.

'do you really like americans?'

well, yes, i am one.

ain't it funny? you expats whine day and night about korea and then turn around and tell us how much you love the place. i spend my time here poking fun at the gutter expat and what does the lil guy conclude? 'you really hate america!' yeah, that's good logic.

'korea needs to be racially sensitve!'

like many you who call me kyopo instead of american? you don't care anything about korean racism. you care only about yourself. and btw, many of you seem to be just as racist as the koreans you cry about. just take a look at dogbert for one good example.

'pawi trivia...'slim

i thought you said you ignored me, slim. i'm one of your favorite posters. you don't think i know that?

I guess I'll have to break out my copy of the U.S.S.R. Constitution.

It had a lot to say about voting rights too.

Snow, we're only deceiving ourselves -- the Khmer Rouge was a democratic group because they started the Party of Democratic Kampuchea, and Kim Jongil leads the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, so along with China, Asia is a bastion of democracy ;)

M_fan, have you ever been to China? What have you been smoking? Quit swallowing the Communist Party's propaganda hook, line and sinker. The Party has been in power since 1949, you call that democracy?

Michael, Hate to go off topic here, but since you said it first - Rather than me regurgitating my points again, I'll let you do the job of rebutting with real facts. I have proven that in China there are elections. See: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/en/doc/2003-12/08/content_288018.htm.

Article 2 of the constitution states that power belongs to the people.
Article 60 states that NPC (legislature body) has a 5 year term.
Article 34 states that anyone above the age of 18 can vote and stand for election.
Article 79 states that the President of China is elected by members of NPC (legislature) which imply that if independent candidates get enough seats at the NPC, there can be a non-communist party President.
Source: http://english.people.com.cn/constitution/constitution.html

And on top of that, independent candidates are getting elected into the NPC and people are participating in elections. If these does not equal democracy, then you must ask yourself why you are in denial. Have you met someone who wanted to participate and met all qualifications yet was not allowed to run in China's election?
