Over half of Koreans OK with international marriage, but women still prefer white dudes

With international marriage in the media spotlight (gee, thanks, Hines), a recent survey by a matchmaking company indicated that over half of Koreans were positive about international marriage:

Bien-Aller, a Seoul-based matchmaking company, conducted the survey looking at 580 single women and men about interracial marriages via the Internet on April 3-10.
In the survey, 54.2 percent of men replied that they are positive about having foreign spouses, while 52.9 percent of women said that they would marry foreigners.
Those respondents who were in favor of interracial marriages pointed out that non-Korean spouses would enrich their lives and were expected to be more committed to their spouses _ the biggest benefit of all.

There were differences between men and women, however, in terms of the preferred ethnicity of desired spouses:

However, the findings show that Korean women have a preference for white men over other races, with 62.1 percent choosing a preference for natives of the U.S. or European countries.
Meanwhile, 73.4 percent of Korean men answered that they prefer Asian spouses who have something in common in terms of race and culture.

There were also differences in reasoning among those who preferred not to marry outside the tribe:

According to the survey, 21.6 percent of men answered that they would hesitate in marrying a non-Korean women due to differences in ways of thinking.
Meanwhile, 21.9 percent of women said that they would be reluctant to marry a foreigner because they don’t want to have mixed-blood children.

Sounds like Korean men and women have entirely different motivations for choosing international marriage.

baker, I think that you’ve correctly read and interpreted a poorly written sentence.

To me, it appears as though the reporter (Chung Ah-young) juxtaposed two pieces of information (Korean women’s racial preferences for a mate, followed by the preferred natinality of an intended spouse), which then comes up looking racist. Seems like poor writing, or else something written in haste of a deadline.

‘Course, I could be wrong - she could have meant what she wrote, just as she wrote it.

Nulji, globalization is the key to riches and more riches. That’s why Korea has given aid to other countries. So it can get back by being a part of global trade. You don’t piss on your allies and trading partners if you want to keep the trade flowing. You actually have to consider their opinions, at least to some degree.

If you think Korea should just shut the doors and ignore all foreign opinions, well, you can see the results of that with your dear brethren in the North. Fortunately, few in the South will listen to you. They’re all too busy making money, and all the more power to them.

Also, did you forget that the US and Japan are still Korea’s second and third largest trading partners? Korea doesn’t have to do everything that foreigners say, but it’s a good idea to listen to their opinions. And tell us again, why it is that you live in the US if you hate it so much?

i’m a little confused on the terminology here. “foreign spouse” and “interracial” seems to be used interchageably. i would think that a gyopo would be a foreign spouse but regarded as same race whereas interracial would necessarily exclude a gyopo.

Some people would call me an anti-Western. But honestly, I think Asian women are the prettiest. Sure, there are some beautiful white women but the average white woman is not that beautiful compared to the average Asian woman. Unfortunately, I find Asian woman to be a little too materialistic with the Loius Vuitton thing going. For once I agree with you. But the article is not suggesting that Korean men would choose Asian women because they are more beautiful. It said that they want spouses who have something in common in terms of race and culture. If that is what they are after, then why not just marry a Korean woman? Perhaps because there are insufficient numbers? So it seems safe to conclude that Korean men favor international marriage out of necessity, not preference.

“Mook, most Asian-American men give a shit. They whine endlessly about the “inter-racial dating disparity”.”

The problem with Asian Americans in general and many pro Western Asians is that all through their lifes they were bred with Western thoughts and values and completely ignoring their own. As a result, as their life matures, it becomes a high achieving individual which is hallow on the inside. That person which is really a clone version is being compared against an authentic version. IBM clone and IBM original, who wins? That coupled with an identity crisis. They need to look up to someone like Bruce Lee who kept his identity and individuality rather than conforming to the social norm.

It is like many Asian countries actually. Many Asian countries, for example their TV programs are bankrupt of ideas. When “Who wants to be a millionaire” becomes popular in the US, these countries spin off their own version of that show. When “American Idol” becomes popular, these countries spin their own version. They are pretty much exact copies but with different host and language. Why pay the premium to license these quiz programs? Why not make your own? Is it that difficult?

Psst. down south of Malaysia, a country is actually a Western clone who meekly obeys and foster friendship without strong principles becasue it is just a tiny island surrounded by big nations. Today, many of the people there are not creative, and many of them are too ‘uptight’, many speaking English better than their mother tongue. Many of them are also not Christians but surprisingly, they spot a Christian name. It is so out of place and weird.

This is why when one says a country is so rich or so advance, I am usually not impressed. There are many ways to achive such glory. Malaysia too could achieve such glory if we kissed up to the super powers. But we have our principles and would rather work hard than take the easy road. Our leader, Dr. Mahathir even have a grand plan to shake up the western world’s financial market through the gold dinar which demonstrates the originality of our thoughts rather than subscribing to conventional Western economic wisdom but alas, he and our country didn’t have the will and power to carry it through yet. China is a country I am banging on to continue on Dr. Mahathir’s legacy. It cannot be another Singapore for then it becomes another ‘Asian American’.

according to a survey done here in states, 85% of caucasin women would choose a black man for a spouse if she married outside her race. still further, the report revealed that some 20% of white women would prefer a black man over a white one under any circumstance but feared the social ramifications of such a preference.

that explains why the largest group of mixed marriages in this country have one black man and one white woman.

I am with you there. Keep banging till she cries out “stop. Please stop!”. At this point, some novice may stop following her command. That is wrong! You just slow down your “banging” a tad bit, but do not stop. This is women’s definition of a sensitive man, a man who knows when to listen to do them and when not to.

You keep banging but also observe how China is doing. If she slows her bucking, she may be really coming. Or, she may say it outright, “I am coming!!!” Then you should really slow down. It is totally insensitive to keep banging when she has come. Whether you achieve your aim or not, this is time to stop.

However, do not totally stop at once and pull out. Women usually hate that. Just slow down in degrees. You have to feel how your woman is doing. Be considerate always.

    Well, Mahir brought it out.

Michael, Hate to go off topic here, but since you said it first - Rather than me regurgitating my points again, I’ll let you do the job of rebutting with real facts. I have proven that in China there are elections. See: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/e.....288018.htm.

Article 2 of the constitution states that power belongs to the people.
Article 60 states that NPC (legislature body) has a 5 year term.
Article 34 states that anyone above the age of 18 can vote and stand for election.
Article 79 states that the President of China is elected by members of NPC (legislature) which imply that if independent candidates get enough seats at the NPC, there can be a non-communist party President.
    Source: http://english.people.com.cn/c.....ution.html

And on top of that, independent candidates are getting elected into the NPC and people are participating in elections. If these does not equal democracy, then you must ask yourself why you are in denial. Have you met someone who wanted to participate and met all qualifications yet was not allowed to run in China’s election?

Agreed your flamin lefty prof was an idiot to say that Cuba is more democratic than the US but at the same time its dictatorship is nowhere near as bad as Batista’s. They are certainly dirt poor due to poor planning, the embargo and cessation of Russian aid) but Cuba can at least boast a highly educated population with universal health care. There’s not much food but few poeple are actually starving. Go there and speak with Cubans and you’ll see the vast majority really want normal relations with the US and for the embargo to be lifted.

Some Americans really need to stop seeing Cuba as a threat to the US before they lose a potential friend to real threats to democracy like China, just as they did with the Soviet Union. Short memory?
