KOREA WINS 7-3!!!
RJKoehler.com Declares Day of National Shame

Care that Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan has offered to resign?

Neither do I.

It’s the bottom of the fourth, and Korea is up 6 to 1.

- Top of the sixth, and Korea is still of 6 to 1. On a related note, Isaac Hayes announced he’ll quite “South Park.” The singer was apparently miffed at the show poking fun at Scientology. No word on his future plans, but perhaps he’ll spend the rest of his days playing golf with Lee Hae-chan.

- Bottom of the sixth, and Korea has gone up 7 to 1. You know, there was some debate about giving military exemptions to the Korean team, but if the U.S. team loses like this, I’ve got the perfect solution. Rather than give the Koreans exemptions, simply send the U.S. team in their place. Given the kind of money these guys make, if they get their asses handed to them in this fashion, A-Rod and company deserve to spend two years manning a DMZ guard post on some mountaintop in Yanggu.

- IT’S OVER. Koreans win 7-3. Speechless, I am. Speechless. No shame in losing to Korea, but there was plenty to be ashamed of in that effort.

- 6,000 comments and counting over at Naver.com. No, I didn’t read them.

Our office is going nuts–people keep looking over at another coworker and me for the “miguk reaction,” but hey, Korea’s got several players in the majors, I expect them to do well. Also, Anaheim is roughly halfway between two of the biggest Korean communities on the West Coast, and the tribe is out in force….

2 Robert March 14, 2006 at 1:59 pm

It might be a long bus ride home tonight…

3 michael March 14, 2006 at 2:08 pm

Did you see that double play? Korea’s playing flat-out better than the U.S. Hit the damn ball Jeter!

4 GI Korea March 14, 2006 at 2:13 pm

Some how I doubt that if the US loses this game the comments here will be filled with hate messages towards Korea or black helicopter KCIA conspiracy theories against American baseball.

5 cm March 14, 2006 at 2:13 pm

It’s not over yet. The US has big boppers in the line up ready to bust loose. I don’t think any Korean players thought they had any kind of chance winning this game. They threw the best at the Mexicans instead and probably thought a win against a US would be an surprise bonus. How about Lee Seung Yop – intentionally walked. This is the same guy who couldn’t buy a try out with a US team.

6 judge judy March 14, 2006 at 2:14 pm

good friggin’ game. i especially like the old korean couple with the trumpet and american flag that they cut to a couple times…

MOTHERFUCKING Timewarner here in the metro ny area isn’t even showing it live. Fucking atrocious. I have to wait another hour for tape delay. Fucking atrocious. FUCK

Once again it astounds me that people watch baseball. But that scientology episode was funny as hell (because it’s all true). Those people are crazy. If he’s quitting over that he must not have a sense of humor. I mean he doesn’t care when they mock the Japanese, Canadians, Mormons, Jews, Fat People, Americans, Catholics, gays or anyone else?

The scientologists are more deserving of mockery than those other groups in my humble opinion.

9 michael March 14, 2006 at 2:36 pm

Hit the damn ball!

10 cm March 14, 2006 at 2:37 pm

Dropped easy foul pop fly by the US first baseman. 7 to 1 Korea. It’s getting ugly and the natives are getting restless. I think this game is fascinating. Korea’s solid fundlemental baseball but not much power versus US’s total raw power hitting and pitching. Which one will win out.

11 R. Elgin March 14, 2006 at 2:50 pm

Go Korea!

As for Scientology, the people who participate in such are either: a) fools or b) criminals. Do research on their escapades in the legal system and read all about it. One famous tactic that they employ is to sue almost anyone that critisises them and bury them in legal fees, thus using the legal system as a means to bully critical voices.

12 JW March 14, 2006 at 2:53 pm

I SMELL MILITARY EXEMPTION!

13 michael March 14, 2006 at 2:55 pm

Korea is playing solid baseball. Is Issac Hayes an Operating Thetan Level III? He’s a complicated man,
but no one understands him but Xenu.

14 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 2:57 pm

Am I Dreaming????? Is this a dream????

15 cm March 14, 2006 at 2:59 pm

Talking about Lee Hae Chan, I cannot believe the raging controversy over a lousy golf game. Politicians can’t have vacations and some relaxation? Give the guy a break.

16 judge judy March 14, 2006 at 3:11 pm

koreans are solid and consistent. americans are being sloppy.

17 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 3:12 pm

I think I know what is going on either this is a dream or Americans are losing on purpose because they don’t want to play with crappy double A equivalent team like Korea.

18 michael March 14, 2006 at 3:16 pm

No, the U.S. is playing like a crappy Double A team–muffing basic plays and dropping easy fouls. Look for a lot more Korean players to pop up in MLB next year….

19 Robert March 14, 2006 at 3:19 pm

I’d better see Jeter in an ROKA uniform manning some hillside in Inje for this…

20 michael March 14, 2006 at 3:21 pm

LOL, I was thinking something similar. Make him and Rodriguez guard the U.S. Embassy.

24 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 3:45 pm

MiraclE@!!!@#! holy sh#t!!!!
I just can’t believe it……
It should be AMerican manager who should be offered to resign not LEe Hae Chan

25 cm March 14, 2006 at 3:56 pm

And this game wasn’t even televised in some areas in the US. I think they were expecting a mercy rule win by the US – just like in the South African game.

Miracle? Not exactly. You have to remember that these guys are millionairs who want to protect their investments – their bodies. So they’re not going to play all out and risk getting hurt for nothing when they have to play a full season of grueling schedules. The WBC games are not even like spring training games to them. Neverthless, upsets like this are good for WBC and good for baseball. This kind of win gives hope to every team that they too have a fighting chance to be competitive. A blowout win by the US every time would not help the promotion of the game. I think the next WBC, the US team will be better prepared and better motivated by the fact that they’re not going to waltz in there and win by 10 runs every time, because the level of competition is high.

26 hardyandtiny March 14, 2006 at 4:00 pm

it is dream come true my life!

that’s hogwash

when you lose, just shut up

28 Robert March 14, 2006 at 4:12 pm

Unless you’re Korean, in which case, you should bitch about the officiating.

29 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 4:15 pm

cm
Yup I totally agree with you and I think they did absolutely fantastic job on protecting their bodies…

30 thorin March 14, 2006 at 4:28 pm

It amazes me that out of the 300 some odd home runs 이승엽 has hit, Detroit Tiger pitching isn’t responsible for any of them.

31 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 4:34 pm

“Unless you’re Korean, in which case, you should bitch about the officiating. ”

You should add Japanese on that list too Robert

32 Yeosu.be.there March 14, 2006 at 4:39 pm

What the hell is this? I thought we had the umpires in our pockets!

33 wjk March 14, 2006 at 4:40 pm

Greatest day ever in Korean baseball history.

34 michael March 14, 2006 at 4:45 pm

It Hurts Our Pride! :)

Hat’s off to Korea, solid, cohesive playing, unlike those overpaid prima donnas that have now lost to CANADA and a country that is supposed to be second in talent to Japan. Pshaw.

35 Yeosu.be.there March 14, 2006 at 4:49 pm

March Madness starts this week!

36 Hannara March 14, 2006 at 4:53 pm

We Koreans should really learn from the Americans how they respect the winners and not bitching about losing.
Like Michael here praises us even though their team lost..

But for now let me enjoy making fun of you Americans since i don’t think this kind of day will ever come again.

37 Charles March 14, 2006 at 4:58 pm

You know, I wasn’t expecting a blow out on either side. Looks like I was wrong. I thought it would be a close game, and expected Korea to be a formidable foe. But the tone was set from the beginning, I think.

I will admit that I’m not a big baseball fan (this might have been the first baseball game I’ve watched in the past decade), so I’m not up on the latest players, but why is this Willis character on the U.S. national team? Did I miss something, or does this guy just suck? Is it an emperor’s clothes kind of thing?

Anyway, I stopped watching after Korea went up 6-1. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went all the way. They’ve been very solid from what I’ve seen so far.

38 Origami March 14, 2006 at 5:07 pm

Actually,

This girl pretty also did very well at Junior World Championship.
She won the freaking Gold Metal!! ;)

39 michael March 14, 2006 at 5:12 pm

Hannara, the U.S. flat-out sucked, but even if they had not made those stupid defensive mistakes, Korea would probably still have won, they were playing very well together.

Don’t get comfortable though ;)

40 hardyandtiny March 14, 2006 at 5:12 pm

Did you notice Korean fan has better fashion?

41 june March 14, 2006 at 5:17 pm

My brother, who happened to be a part-time baseball player at a Busan amateur baseball club, called me from Busan, Korea. He said that he cried after the game and let his business shut down for a day. But my husband, who was not a big baseball fan, wasn’t happy about team USA’s performance at all. Anyway, I am very happy that team Korea (my motherland) won, although I like team USA (the country of my American family) too.

A great thing about team Korea is that the old school Korean players like Chan Ho Park and Hee-Sop Choi played so hard in order to get a possible military draft exemption for their younger colleagues. I would call this the brotherly-love of the Korean men. Go Team Korea!

42 The Goat March 14, 2006 at 5:42 pm

Congratulations to the Korean team! The only thing I am a little worried about is having the ariwaves clouded with reruns for the next four or so years of the same stinking games. Such as it goes.

About the game itself. Although I did not see it (was following using the wbc play by play), I found the decision to pass Seung-yeop to put two on with two out a little odd. The guy at second was pretty meaningless one way or another with two out – the force was meaningless. As for being afraid of his power? Huh? Chicken shit managing did not pay off and the deserving team won the game.

43 snow March 14, 2006 at 6:41 pm

Congrats to the Korean team. Sounds like they’ve got some fine players there.

Robert, a national day of shame?!? Are you kidding? It’s only a stupid baseball game. Even when Canada tanked in Olympic hockey, I was a bit irked at how they sucked, but I certainly didn’t take it personally. Never. Well, maybe if I played for the team, but otherwise not a chance.

That’s the thing that gets me in Korea about all the soul-searching that goes on when a team doesn’t live up to expectations. Why pin so much personal self-worth or self-loathing on some stupid sports game? (I’m not saying this is what you’re doing, Robert).

44 R. Elgin March 14, 2006 at 7:24 pm

Way cool.

Maybe some Americans should go and shave their heads, downtown, in public and carry signs. I did like the idea of some of the U.S. players guarding the embassy though . . . :-)

45 hardyandtiny March 14, 2006 at 7:44 pm

“A great thing about team Korea is that the old school Korean players like Chan Ho Park and Hee-Sop Choi played so hard in order to get a possible military draft exemption for their younger colleagues. I would call this the brotherly-love of the Korean men. Go Team Korea!”

June great point! Now Korean older players have become more like global athletes. I am also proud of the older players and what they have done. It is similar to what happened in the transformation in our football team during World Cup. There is no longer a disrespect from older to younger. Go Team Korea!
PS: There is a rally planned I heard at City Hall this Friday. I will be going there!!!!!

As GI Korea pointed out, are there hatefest and accusations of conspiracies and gnashing of teeth and death threats by Americans against Koreans? Nope.

Sports is more than winning and losing. It’s also about sportsmanship. A lesson that I don’t think Koreans have yet mastered.

47 Robert March 14, 2006 at 9:37 pm

As GI Korea pointed out, are there hatefest and accusations of conspiracies and gnashing of teeth and death threats by Americans against Koreans? Nope.

Then again, the game wasn’t nearly close enough for accusations of conspiracies to be a viable option.

48 GI Korea March 14, 2006 at 9:58 pm

I think even if it was a close game and the Koreans won on a controversial run like the US did against Japan, I don’t think anyone would be complaining that the Koreans bought the umpires and other comments made after the US won the game against Japan. I think the bitching would still be focused on how the US team sucks (because they do) and the Koreans deserved to win (which they did) as you see in the above comments compared to bitching about umpires.

49 dogbertt March 14, 2006 at 10:33 pm

Compared to the Naver comments board, which was filled with foul racist comments against Japanese and Americans following the game between those two teams, the Yahoo comments board indeed contains only condemnations of the U.S. team.

50 tomyam jipangu March 15, 2006 at 1:30 am

Hello I am a japanese and posting from Japan.
Sorry in advance if my english is not good enough.

Congrutatulations for the Korean National team for the win against the USA.

Despite the post of GIkorea it was good to see that the Korean team was able to earn a DEFINITIVE WIN without ANY help FROM THE UMPIRE.

I think that despite the estimation before the WBC, Korean players have shown that their abilities are on the top of the world among US player and Japanese players (along with others from other parts of the world).

I am sure that Lee Seung Yop will play in the majour league the next season.

Can’t wait to seet match between Japan and Korea. It will be a very tough game.
Cheers

This is another milestone in the inexorable decline of the United States that began early in Bush’s first term.
