Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission

The Korea Herald takes a look at the oft-forgotten (but never unappreciated) Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC), i.e., the Swiss and Swedish military observers up in Panmunjeom. For much of the 53-year history of the Cold War, the Swiss and Swedes were joined by observers from Poland and Czechoslovakia, two paragons of Cold War neutrality, but the North Koreans evicted them from their homes in ‘93 and ‘95. Bummer.
Anyways, W.O. Gunnar Skoldberg, a Swede who served in the NNSC in 1954, has posted a brief account of his tour over at Korea: A Tour of Duty. Be sure to check out the photos he posted over at A Tour of Duty’s photo albums (and while you’re over there, be sure to check out the other albums).
Also a must see is the online photo collection of Thomas Maeder, a Swiss who served in the NNSC in 1980-1981.
