When a name is more than a name

Great video footage!

This little ruckus between rightist and (mostly student) leftist groups over Danguk University professor Kang Jeong-koo demonstrates the importance of titles and honorifics in Korean.

Yes Robert but Naver *insists* on using MS Media Player, which I’m not installing on my Mac. I wish these news agencies would get away from Microsoft products.

    Thanks, Robert. A great video.

    1) Things got a lot better. When I was growing up in Korea (1960s), people do not push and argue like this. They used to curse, spit and throw punches. And, run away. People were vicious then.

    2) Students are for Prof. Kang and the right of free speech. The outsiders, who claim they are alumni of the DdongKuk University, are against him. In Korea, Confucianism still reigns. Once you establish that you are an upper hand, usually through your age or through your status, then you win. That happened here. They insist that they are “equal in age to students’ father”.

    3) One student addressed one outsider (there is no proof that he is really a member of the alumni) with “You”(???). The receiving person got mad or he pretends to be mad. He demanded that he be called “Sir Teacher”(????? or “Sir Alumnus”(?????.

    4) Finally, the police came and things calmed down. It is very interesting to see the younger generation, the students, still show respect to the old even when they argue. Koreans are still Koreans. And, I like that.

I couldn’t get the video to work here in Georgia even though I have the latest version of media player…

I wonder if/when the veterans and older conservatives are going to head down to Pyongtaek?

The Joongang editorial said the hold outs and squatters are supposed to be moved off the land by the end of this month.

Sunday is supposed to be a 5,000 protest day, and from the fact the news mentioned it before hand, I think they are expecting a repeat of July and May.

In some of the videos from last year, it appears not the veterans or right-ist groups have already been squaring off with the Priest and crew, but perhaps local business interests. I’ve read before where they have put together anti-protest groups before when the Priest and crew have staged many protests week after week and were hurting business badly.

I think the preverbial you know what is about to hit the fan….

I am in LA and I have no problem. Are you guys doing it right? You have to click on the button which reads “300K” to start the video.

Why, H&H? Because it would be simpler to post an .avi or .mpg file instead of insisiting on a restrictive file protocol that *only* works with a Microsoft product. Baduk, you are using a Windows machine, no?

Yes, I am using Windows XP.

Because the WMV authoring tools and streaming-video server apps are free when you can pirate from your friends. On the Mac you’d have to pay for Quicktime Pro, or for the streaming server necessary to host the video.

I second VLC. It has worked well on both Windows and Mac for me, as opposed to MS Media Player.

My father has a penchant to use exaggerated formality in decidedly unformal contexts for a slight comic effect. For example, in a restaurant he would refer to the waiter as ????? My kid sister, who was very young at the time, wanted some ice water. Korean restaurants are notorious for not providing ice water as a given, even in the summer. She asked my dad about it and my father told her to ask the waiter herself. Since her Korean was horribly lacking at the time, she found herself in that terrible dilemma that we kyopos tend to experience from time to time in a Korean setting. So she raised her hand, and motioned toward the waiter and said in a shy, timorous voice:”????? ….”

Your father is very wise. If you are rough on waiters, they are known to spit on your food. Or, worse.
