Matthew Stinson has a pretty good piece on Kim “Mr. Pantsuit” Jong-il’s Let Me See Your Goodies economic tour of go-go China that was written up in The New York Times recently.
News that Kim Jong-il left North Korea for a visit to China sparked
all kinds of media and blogospheric speculation at where the big-haired
despot might go and what he might be doing, with a general consensus
arising that his trip was timed to take advantage of emergence of
Iranian President Ahmadinejad as the Walking Sound Bite of Evil(tm) and
Iran, the chief object of Washington’s concern. So, did Kim go
to Russia after going to China? Did he treat himself to the splendors
of Chinese KTV girls in Shanghai? Was he in town to check out the
weapons of the People’s Liberation Army? The New York Times’ Norimitsu Onishi cuts through the rumor-mongering of previous weeks with an account of Kim’s third tour of southern China, which has analysts thinking that Kim may take another stab at free market reforms, which the DPRK haphazardly began in 2002.
