OK, let me get this straight. A guy gets 10 months in prison for dicking around on his wife and getting a girl in the sack by promising to marry her, but some dude slashes another guy’s face open with a beer bottle and gets a suspended sentence?

I think it is important to clarify that the beer bottle GI did pay $15,000 dollars in compensation money to the victim which is probably why he got the suspended sentence.
The other guy did not pay any compensation money and that is probably why he got 10 months.
It is also important to remember that both these guys are going to get slammed by the military as well for their crimes. So they get double punished. So don’t think these guys are getting off easy.
Bear in mind that Korean courts are typically comparatively lenient. In every case where the Korean media decries GIs getting off with light sentences for crimes against Korean civilians, they conveniently omit the fact that those GIs were tried and sentenced by Korean courts in accordance with SOFA.
Sgt. Han was a married man who cheated on his wife by telling women that he was a colonel in the US Army and that he would marry them. He even hired a guy to pretend to be his father. Sgt. Han is scumbag who deserves at least ten months in jail.
I do not know if this is just a conincidence, but I know a 42-year-old Korean woman who met a Korean-American man on the Internet who claimed to be a colonel in the US Army. He wined and dined her on a US Army base here in Korea, promised to marry her, had sex with her, and even made some excuse to borrow a large sum of money from her (I think it was either 15 or 20 million won). After that he disappeared, but did call her a few times afterwards to arrogantly gloat.
I intend to call my friend and tell her about this story, in case Sgt. Han is the same scumbag who swindled her.
A guy like Sgt. Han is a scumbag and deserves to be punished. However, I also think that the girl is really stupid. She must be too na?ve or just too ignorant. Although the girl’s upbringing in conservative Korean society might confuse her, dating or sleeping with the guy (esp. with foreign nationality) does not necessarily mean that the person will marry you. When she dates a foreign man, she should know that not all foreign men respect conservative Korean dating / marriage culture. Well, there might be some signs that he is married in the beginning of their relationship; there are the two important things indicating that the man must be married: first, he never shows you his place (because he lives with his wife), and second, he never goes out with you on the weekend (because he has to spend his time with his wife and possibly with their kids). Korean girls should learn more about dating men from other cultures. My suggestion is that they should subscribe to Cosmopolitan or something else.
The only victim in this case would be the cheater’s wife (assuming that she is Korean too).
June, Han lived in South Korea through his high school years. How foreign is he in terms of his knowledge and respect of Korean culture? For all intents and purposes, she was dating someone from her culture.

Well, not exactly. Had he been a “foreigner” (i.e., not ethnically Korean), I doubt he would have gotten 10 months in the pen. Judging from the Stars and Stripes piece, it seemed the judge came down on him because he was “Korean” (i.e., he was raised in Korea), and hence should have known better.

What do you read in the Stars & Stripes article that I do not read? How is Sgt. Han’s wife a scumbag? Because she gave him $50 a week allowance? How does his wife “take” $1000 of his monthly salary without his permission? By the way, are sergeants only getting paid $1,050 a month these days?
In Korean culture, the wife usually manages the money, and there is nothing scumbagish about that. By the way, $50, is more than many Korean men get. That is such a lame excuse on Sgt. Han’s part. Also, if Sgt. Han just needed a shoulder to cry on, then why did he have to lie about his rank, his salary, and marriage intentions?
By the way, the writer of the article seems confused. I doubt that “the wife” has asked for “$10 million.” Maybe, it was 10 million won? If it were really $10 million, then I think I would rather spend my 10 months in jail rather than negotiate a cash settlement.

Allow me to beg the question Gerry Bevers: on what grounds is Han a scumbag when cheating on your wife in Korea is as common as eating kimchi? Looks like they’ve both got their issues, but Mrs. Han doesn’t sound innocent to me. No Korean man (although, he is technically American) is going to accept a mere $200 monthly allowance from an impressive $4000-a-month income. How is Han supposed to get regular sports massage on that? Guess that’s why he had to pull the swindle on his girlfriend.
