I agree with Oranckay in that many perceive that there is talent in Korea and, thus, it was not so far fetched that a Korean scientist may have made such a break-through.

My only hope is that Korean society become more demanding in self-examination and develop less tolerance and understanding for fraud and unethical behaviour. It would only benefit the entire country and the next generations of Koreans to come.

This commentary in the NYT seems very apropriate:

Here is another fine postmortem on Dr. Hwang and why stem cell production is not like producing cars and chips.

Oops, Sorry Michael, I missed your link to the same article!

Hwang’s on YTN right now still claiming that MizMedi switched the stem cells…but as someone here pointed out, weren’t those checked every day? Wouldn’t someone notice the difference?

He also admitted that he paid some money to egg donors–a far cry from when he said he knew nothing about women getting paid for their eggs. This guy has some credibility issues, to say the least.

    I think Baduk did it.

He seemed real confident this was all a scam. Someone should put a 24/7 guard on Snuppy.

Hey, the cells look taller, and their voices sound funny. And what’s with all that facial hair?

I wonder if Hwang used the phrase, “I slipped in a sperm”.

I think Baduk is in cahoots with Schatten, Koizumi and Amb. Vershbow to slip Hwang a sperm. He been robbed!

Who cares now, who switched or stitched (tailor-made) the cells???.. They did’nt prove to be right!!.. What a shame!!..
To who-so-ever was involved in the scandal !! You know who you are.. Don’t you??

There is no longer any doubt as to Hwang’s guilt, Wildwind. As one editiorial recently put it “it’s time to wake up from the dream.” I recently wrote in on the “Schatten to get sacked: Hankyoreh” thread, Schatten has been shown guilty of a pattern of systematic, long-ranging corruption. To my knowledge, there are no credible claims against MizMedi, except from the least credible of sources - Hwang himself.

Oh and I’ll admit that I donated the sperm. It was an accident though.

Yeah, and these accidents have caused a chaos..and scientific fraud/s (who knows how many??) not to be excused anytime!
A Wake-up Call for Everyone… including those who placed their trust in these high profile scientists!

Oranckay has a very good analysis of the Korean stem cell fiasco (hat tip Marmot). The key point is the social context that enabled and supported the fraud even after some questions were being raised:Put simply, I think Korean
