North Korea’s lawsuit against the South for mistreatment of North Korean spies later repatriated to the North has resulted in South Korean victims of North Korean abductions launching a suit of their own against the North, reports the Herald Saengsaeng News. Four kidnap victims later, who managed later to escape back to the South, have conveyed to the South Korean government a complaint against North Korea’s ruling Korean Workers Party demanding US$100 million each in damages. Civic groups representing kidnap victims had apparently been preparing for such a suit, but decided to submit it early after hearing about North Korea’s lawsuit.
Seoul, meanwhile, is preparing to ignore both lawsuits. In particular, the government feels the North Korean suit is nonsensical, and will respond resolutely should Pyongyang raise the matter during official intra-Korean discussions.
