UPDATE: Thanks to CCTV, we have video footage of the girls’ Christmas night rampage. Original reports appear to have been slightly exaggerated, but the video is amusing, none the less. Thanks a lot, June.

Japanese filmmaker Shinji Aoyama is apparently miffed by Korean actor Bae Yong-joon moistening panties in his native land:
"I really want to say this," the director said, clearly exasperated. "To me, Japanese women who flock to see Yonsama (Korean actor Bae Yong-joon) are repulsive. When I see something so repulsive, whoever they are carrying on about, [...]

It has come to my attention that I’d made the unpardonable mistake of leaving long-time Korea blogger and fellow Hoya the Big Hominid off my sidebar. This oversight, by no means intentional, has been rectified, so be sure to visit BigHominid’s Hairy Chasms as much as humanly possible.
Oh, and Drambiue Man has moved to Blogspot. [...]

Just to show you that we Buddhists can also get into the Yuletide spirit:
Ripped off from here and here, respectively.
Oh, and the merry men who run the green tea plantations in Boseong are in a holiday mood as well.
Pic taken from here.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

The Ministry of Unification would like you to know that contrary to earlier media reports, Comrade Unification Minister Chung Dong-young was NOT bombarded by eggs thrown by angry Korean-Americans during during a meeting Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles. I’d image these photos are all over cyberspace by now, but that doesn’t make them any less pleasing to the eye.

The Korean garden built in Guangzhou, China is apparently quite popular with locals, says Gyeonggi Province. As mentioned before, the garden is a counterpart to a Chinese garden built in Suwon.

Former Hwang Woo-suk collegue Roh Sung-il is reportedly dodging Internet rumors that he’s a U.S. citizen. In a telephone conversation with a reporter from Edaily, Roh strongly denied the rumors, saying he’s a reserve captain in the ROK Army and a good, tax-paying citizen of Korea.
He did spend three years studying in the United States–at [...]

Neither Korea might like the new U.S. ambassador in Seoul, but House International Relations Committee chairman Henry Hyde apparently does–OFK has a letter written by Hyde to Ambassador Vershbow that really is a MUST READ. Here’s the money shot:
Those who inflict suffering on these innocent people are, indeed, members of a "criminal regime." Those who [...]

Although it didn’t snow quite as much as it did in the Jeolla provinces, Seoul did get a little snow yesterday. The new banner image was taken from a window where I work in the Bukchon neighborhood.

A number of Korean media sources (in this case, the Kyunghyang Shinmun), quoting Kanwa Defense Review, are reporting that the Chinese navy will begin trials of its new Type 94 SSBN by the end of the year. The boats would be formally commissioned within two years. Not only is the sub supposedly loaded with more [...]

More foreign policy wonk material (in .pdf format)–albeit much shorter than the last–from the ICG. Many readers are probably already familiar with much of its content, but it remains a good summary of the historical, territorial (including Dokdo and Kando) and nationalistic disputes that plague this little neck of the woods. As it begins:
Shifting power [...]

CNN caught Yonhap’s attention by claiming in a report on cosmetic eyelid surgery in Korea that Korean women began getting the procedure in the 1950s in order to draw the attention of U.S. GIs by looking more white.

Schatten demanded US$200,000 from Hwang? Hmm…
An official from the World Stem Cell Hub, however, denies ever receiving such a request, although he said he didn’t know whether the Hwang team received one directly.
This isn’t the first time Schatten has been accused of making demands of Hwang just prior to their split–the JoongAng, of course, reported [...]

Hong Kong authorities are prepared to charge 11 Korean farmers with holding an illegal demonstration, assault, rioting and destruction of public property (including, quite possibly, the defacing of the U.S. consulate and storming of a Korean diplomatic compound). If found guilty of rioting, the farmers could earn a 10-year vacation in a Hong Kong jail. [...]
