Former Hwang Woo-suk collegue Roh Sung-il is reportedly dodging Internet rumors that he’s a U.S. citizen. In a telephone conversation with a reporter from Edaily, Roh strongly denied the rumors, saying he’s a reserve captain in the ROK Army and a good, tax-paying citizen of Korea.
He did spend three years studying in the United States–at Ohio State and Eastern Virginia medical school.
According to the paper, one Netizen?who identified himself as a Korean-American?wrote an online letter entitled "Roh Sung-il is a U.S. Citizen." In it, he claimed Roh was an American who acquired U.S. citizenship "pledging allegiance to the United States standing in front of the U.S. flag."
The letter has been making its way around online bulletin boards and blogs. If you read Korean and want to give it a looksie, here it is. I know a couple of my overseas Korean readers will no doubt find it amusing. Or horrifying.

What difference would it make if he even were a US citizen? As the Robert Kim case demonstrates the pledge of allegiance need not carry any more weight than when foreign workers in Korea are asked to salute the taegugi and sing its praises.
You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you.
iheartblueballs: EXACTLY!! Man, you’re full of pure genius in your statements. I tried to compliment you on them before, but I don’t think my comment made it up..
Netizen = retard.
Except this comparison isn’t fair to retards, so I apologise to them.
bastard….
Netizen = retard
Willam G = Netizen
therefore, Willam G = Retard(?)
Sorry, William but you and I are also netizens.
Over my dead body
It would appear that the Netizen is trying to impute some anti-Korean motive in Roh Sung-il’s revelations. I think this assertion might have had traction two weeks ago, but didn’t the nationalism train leave the station for good last week? He needs to get a new timetable.
Okayspeaking of another issue dear to nationalistic netizens’ heartshappy news: Apolo Anton Ohnowhose girlfriend’s roommate is KA Olympic speedskating contender Kim Hyo-junglikes Korean food, and orders his favourite dishes in Korean.

Watch for the press report on the pliminary findings of the investigation on Hwang, in one hour.
The SNU investigation results are in. Hwang’s 2005 Science paper has been now officially found to be a fraud by SNU. Nine out of eleven supposed stem cells were not real stem cells. The remaining two cells need to have DNA testing to know if they really are grown stem cells. Listening to answers to press questions, the SNU seems to rate highly the probability that Hwang was the one who ordered the fake stem cells to be made. According to SNU, Schatten’s role or how much Schatten was involved is not known nor clear. At this point, the fate of what will happen to professor Hwang seems clearer. Now the only remaining question is, are there really stem cells. We will soon find out for sure, once the DNA tests are completed. But for Hwang, with this result, it looks like his career is almost at the end.
I’ll say it again. Even if a few weeks from now SNU finds the original stem cells were authentic it won’t matter a rat’s ass ’til both Hwang and SNU’s work/investigation are verified and duplicated by an international body.
Without getting all conspiracy theory what better way to save and preserve Korean patents than let Hwang fall now and then vouch for the authenticity of the original “unique Korean” process? It gives the image of credibility.
Until such international verification of SNU’s own scrutinization any in house Korean announcements should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
