Dr.Hwang told the truth finally, "there was no stem cell". After announcing to the world that there were 11 stem cell lines specially suited to the donors on May, he now says there was none. He reported a high success rate too, one successful stem cell out of eleven tries.

All lies! Never mind!

Where were the other people in his lab? He did not write this fiction all by himself. I want blood. Not only Hwang's but other accomplices. They all joined in and lie to Korean people.

I see silver lining in this affair, though. The PD diary took on a very difficult task of breaking the news. And, netizens including BRIC(several picture falsifications), Pressian (Dr.Howard Lee's letter to the editor), DCinsider(great work on discovering Photoshop enhancement on Hwang's paper), Korean Engineer site, and the last but the least, young professors in Seoul National University who demanded the investigation to the dean who was very reluctant.

Korea has grown up. People savvy with computers and science are popping up everywhere. This type of fact-finding through technology(photo match)can only be done with people familiar with technology. And, people who are brave enough to go after the truth.

Hats off to people who fought along with me to kick Hwang's lying ass. The liar deserves all he will be getting - a possible prison sentence.

P.S. I have been telling everyone I know that Hwang is a liar since two years ago when he start receiving national attention. He did not behave like a scientist at all. And, he enjoyed giving lectures to people than working in the lab. I knew right away that he was not a true scientist. A true scientist loves to hide away in the lab mixing chemicals and dream about great discovery. No time to waste on talking to ajummas and adjussis.

this story is getting bigger; google shows about 275 english language stories with the nyt as it's lead.

where is dr hwang? why isn't he speaking out? if these accusations aren't true, why the silence? he better hurry up and speak. his silence makes him look suspicious.

i've got a really bad feeling about this.

Nulji\'s comment was a little harsh, even though I understand where he\'s coming from. Maybe the S.K. gov\'t shouldn\'t have rushed to embrace Hwang, but that kind of thing can happen anywhere. I hope the science proves to be real...I think Koreans can be too hard on themselves, and this incident would not help.

Schatten himself looks pretty bad in this. He signed his name on as a co-author of an article that -- at most -- he merely read and had a graduate student proofread to correct because he wanted to be in on the cutting edge of stem-cell technology.

That was bad enough.

Now, he wants to undo the past and remove his name. Sorry, Sir, but you danced, now you gotta pay the fiddler.

As for Hwang et al., if they did cheat -- and that remains to be seen -- then they probably thought that they were close enough to succeeding that they could claim to have made the cloning technique work, thereby obtain the prize of first place, receive the glory, maybe a future Nobel Prize, keep their 'technique' a secret citing patenting issues, and quietly develop the true technique after the fact, and upon succeeding obtain the patent rights and 'prove' themselves to the world.

If that's the scenario that they had in mind, then it's not going according to the script.

But I'm still withholding judgement.

From what I've seen so far, nobody looks very good in this entire affair.

Jeffery Hodges

Schatten is pulling out of the journal article because he is scared. More evidences on picture manipulation are surfacing everyday. See BRIC(<a href="http://gene.postech.ac.kr/bbs/zboard.php?id=job)discussion" rel="nofollow">http://gene.postech.ac.kr/bbs/zboard.php?id=job)discussion</a> board. Today, they found the link between the Hwang's published photo and one stem cell line kept at the Mizmedi hospital. This could be the crucial evidence of Hwang's falsification along with testimony by Kim SunJong, the scientist who was told by Hwang to make fabricated pictures.

The house of cards is finally coming down. I hope Hwang, Rho(Sungil) and Park(GiYoung) go to jail when their scheme of swindling taxpayer's money finally brought to public.

The truth is that somatic nuclear transfer does not work. There is telomere evidence and mitochondrial DNA evidence that prohibit this "cloning". After Hwang, the world media should go after Wilmut as well. He is the mother of all lies about cloning.

Those who wants to read more, visit my blog. <a href="http://koreanamerican431.blogspot.com/." rel="nofollow">http://koreanamerican431.blogspot.com/.</a> I have been at Hwang's trail for almost three years since His announcement of cloning a cow.

You know I used to be a great Chosunilbo fan. However, about this issue, the newspaper was not only partial but extremely prejudiced for Hwang. Sorry Marmot for defaming your employer.

I cannot help but think that there is somebody getting paid by Hwang's camp. Even this article announced by Schatten himself was never in Chosun's front page but was hidden somewhere deep initially so that I could not find it. Only through Naver search, I read the article.

Chosun behaved extremely biased on this issue. Even to the level of Yellow journalism. I have not seen the same behavior from JoongAng or from DongA.

Only leads me to think that someone at Chosun is backing up Hwang in the big way. The big way in Korea means "payoff".
