Got back last night from Beijing. Thanks go out to Andy for posting some good material while I was gone, and my commenters for keeping things civil, porn and donuts aside.
OK, and for more big, red buildings than you can shake a stick at it, I give you my photos:
Tiananmen Gate, Uncle Mao and the Forbidden City.
It was so friggin’ cold and windy I didn’t take as many photos as I
wanted. Besides, the Forbidden City is kind of like the Gyeongbok
Palace in Seoul. Only bigger. And red. Very red.
More red buildings coming your way, this time courtesy Yonghe Lamasery, one of the largest Tibetan lamasery’s outside of Tibet. It’s a very pleasant place, actually, and well worth the 25 yuan entry fee. Spent most of yesterday morning there praying for smooth flying weather, because I absolutely hate flying, and nothing terrifies me more than turbulence:
I don’t mean to brag, but some of those photos don’t actually suck–the contrast between the cloudless blue sky and the colorfully painted temple halls was quite breathtaking.

nice pics. there’s the largest buddha carved out of a single piece of wood there if i recall correctly. unbelievably huge, but you aren’t allowed to photograph it.
Glad you’re back from China–I was just reading in the NYT that the marmot population is going down fast, apparently because Chinese people are eating them:

You got out safely!
