Domain name

I’ve got myself a domain name and mapped it to this site.  This means that in the event that I should ever decide to change blogging software or webhosts–as I am want to do–there will be no need to change your links.  Which is nice.  Anyways, the new domain name is:
http://www.rjkoehler.com
As you have no doubt [...]

The Chosun Ilbo goes to the Hamptons

It’s not everyday that Long Island gets featured in the Chosun Ilbo’s travel section, so why not celebrate it with a link.
Just a note: No, I don’t come from the Hamptoms, nor, apparently, do I come from this anywhere on this list, although I do come from somewhere around here, judging from the bridge in [...]

Patient-tailored stem cells never existed: SNU

A Seoul National University panel looking into the Hwang Woo-suk fiasco announced Thursday that DNA analysis confirmed that five stem cells Hwang claimed could be developed into patient-specific stem cells did not match their donors:

Patient-specific stem cells that South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk claimed to have made never existed, a South Korean academic panel said [...]

On the movie front: ?????? ???????…

The film Blue Swallow, which tells the tale of pioneering female aviator Park Kyong-won, is apparently facing difficulties ahead of its Dec. 29 opening, reports the Korea Times.  The reason?  The heroine, played by the super-cute Jang Jin-young, was apparently a big, dirty chinil-pa (pro-Japanese).  The trailblazer, Korea’s first-ever female civilian pilot, was killed when [...]

‘Oldboy’ makes Salon’s ‘10 Best of 2005′

Salon.com film critic Stephanie Zacharek picked Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy as one of the 10 best films of 2005.

Who gave how much money and why?

As the Hwang Woo-suk saga turns, attention is now focusing on allegations that Dr. Hwang gave junior researchers large amounts of money to shut them up.  The Chosun Ilbo started the fun with a report Tuesday that researcher Kim Seon-jong, currently at the University of Pittsburgh, received US$30,000 from Hwang.  Kim had previously told broadcaster [...]

I hate it when that happens

OK, so a 25-year-old burglar, identified by his family name of Park, breaks into an apartment in Jeju City.  Using a cigarette lighter for illumination, he notices the 50-year-old owner of the apartment sleeping in the bedroom.  Figuring he might as well help himself to a little tail, Park goes over to the owner, gropes [...]

Wordpress 2.0 / free Wordpress blogs

All you Wordpress users will be happy to know that WP 2.0 is out.
And those looking to give Wordpress a try might want to check out Wordpress.com, a free WP hosting service.  Unfortunately, the service doesn’t allow users to play with plugins (which, frankly, is much of the fun with WP, and one of the [...]

You won’t have Comrade Chung to kick around anymore

OK, not really, but Comrade Unification Minister Chung Dong-young did express his intention to resign his ministerial position as soon as the budget is passed sometime around New Years.  Chung told Yonhap on Tuesday that he informed President Roh of his intention during a brunch this morning.
A source close to Health and Welfare Minister Kim [...]

Random N.K. news pics

And to celebrate the women of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea:

The KCNA (via Yonhap) recalled the moving tale of Kim Yong-ok, who recently recovered from successful plastic surgery in China to repair her severely burned face.  Kim, a naval educator who apparently teaches sailors about preserving revolutionary slogans (no, I’m not joking), suffered severe [...]

Far Outliers’ Greatest Hits

Far Outliers is approaching two years old, and to mark the occasion, Joel was kind enough to link to his most popular posts.  Be sure to read them.

Roh almost stuck fork in Sunshine: Chosun Ilbo

I didn’t see this translated in the English edition of the Chosun Ilbo, so I guess I might as well mention it here: Korea’s Paper of Record is reporting–with not a single source mentioned in the entire piece–that President Roh came damn close to discontinuing his government’s policy of engagement with North Korea following Pyongyang’s [...]

Finnish border guards issue tests to determine ‘real Koreans’

With increasing numbers of Chinese illegals entering the EU with forged Korean passports, Finland border guards are apparently testing Korean passport holders to see if they are really Korean.
No word on whether Finnish border authorities have instituted minimum scores in All Look Same for new recruits.

Yeah, my wife found that.
Oh, and while I’m at Funpics, I guess I should link to this one, if only because I saw some Korean paper make note of it the other day.
