Sisa Journal (Korean) has a pretty nice piece on the "black Korean," Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward.
English speakers can check out SI’s interview with Ward from January.

Multi-millionaire lets his Mom work menial labor in a school cafeteria? And he say’s he’s proud of that? The Koreans try to claim as their own anyone famous who has even a fraction of kimchi blood despite the fact they are very racist against anyone not “pure”. I say let ‘em have Hines Ward.

The possibility that she might want to work to keep busy, as a lot of people who have worked all their lives are wont to do, never occurred to you? And who says she’s doing menial labor now? The article says she works hard, but it didn’t say whether she was mopping floors or managing the place.
And he say’s he’s proud of that?
He said he’s proud of the fact that she’s a hard worker, suggesting she doesn’t take anything for granted. That and her humility is what he says he learned from her.
The Koreans try…
That’s right. Everyone. A secret ballot was taken and 100% decided this.
…try to claim as their own…
It was Hines Ward himself who brought it up, and being born in Seoul to someone who’s Korean was one of the first things mentioned in the SI article. It’s natural, and by no means exclusive to Korea, for the local media to pick up on something like that.
…anyone famous who has even a fraction…
The guy is half Korean. From second grade he was raised by his Korean mom. He was born in Seoul. A better question would be why are you trying to deny him a right to identify himself as being Korean.
…of kimchi blood…
Not going to comment; just wanted to highlight this.

It is not a universal thing that everyone feels that way about being “pure.” 8% of marriages today in Korea are to people with other nationalities (though a good chunk might be ethnic Koreans from elsewhere), and a number of mixed Korean performers are enjoying immense popularity.
There may still be a lot of people who go ballistic over “impure” offspring, but here’s the media trying to highlight a person of mixed ethnicity who is thriving, and you feel the need to rip it apart. Maybe some people in the media are trying to show that people of mixed heritage are just as good and can do just as well as anyone else. The people you’re griping about are not the people who put this article together.
I am from Pittsburgh, and when I am home, I point out to other Steeler fans that Hines Ward is Korean. Nobody cares, ever. He is not Korean, Black, or anything else. He is a great STEELER.

All the evidence on Hines Ward is that he’s a great kid who loves and is proud of his mother — whose selfless labor for her son is an exemplar of the finest traits of the Korean immigrant experience in America. Treacly sports human-interest reporting always brings a tear to my eye and his mother’s story is inspiring. I say let the Koreans have Hines Ward too, as long as we get him back.
The treacle-down theory of sports human-interest stories.
Newsflash!
Pittsburgh Steeler’s Hines announces that he will force his mother’s early retirement from the food services industry.
Hines will hire a host of personal trainers, golf instructor, and the four men from Queers Eyes in addition to a harem of young men to insure that Mrs. Hines lead a life of perfectly unproductive life eating bon-bons while watching Oprah.
According to Hines, “I am very proud that I can give my mother, the ultimate American Dream. I am glad that she will no longer be working in such dehumanizing workplace such as the American high school cafeteria. Now she can pursue her true interests in writing romance novels. She is also thinking about going back to medical school. I am also buying her the nex XBOX 360″

Good one virtual hahaha
Whenever I visited Pittsburgh area for Army Reserve duty, I get to see lots of Hines Ward on billboard and in local media. It is wonderful to see someone like him who is considered hero in Pittsburgh area while highly praising his half Korean background. He was raised eating Korean food ever since he moved to his mother’s house per Korean Documentary show back in 1998 when they were covering Ward during his college days.
You are all blowing this out of proportion. Who is Hines Ward????
5 years from now, no one will remember who is Hines Ward, unless you are a football fan.
Hines Ward is only getting a lot of publicity because he is visiting Korea at this time. Koreans, as I understand it gives their sporting heros a nice welcome when they arrive at the airport when they have done well - soccer team, baseball team, speedskaters, etc. etc.
If Korean media makes no coverageof Hines, you will blame them for being racists for not accepting Hines into Korea and not giving him the same treatment they would give to authentic Korean atheletes.
Now, they give him fair treament as they would to their other athletes, and you claim that Korea is trying to “win him back”.
Let’s put everything in good perspective:
IF NOT FOR HINES VISITING KOREA AT THIS TIME, THERE WOULD BE NO COVERAGE OF THIS MAN IN THE KOREAN MEDIA.
Any Korean, even Authentic Korean who are born overseas and had done well in sports would have received similar treatment from the Korean media. If a Korean American were to represent the US and win an Olympic gold medal, he too will be greeted with a hero’s welcome at the airport in Seoul. But only while his visit is in Korea. After that, everyone will forget about him. So don’t try to overanalyze this.
mahathir_fan–You might actually want to learn something about Korea before posting here. Don’t try to analyze that you don’t understand. Case in point:
If you could actually read the article to which this post was linked, you’ll notice the article was written even before the Super Bowl, and way before Ward even considered visiting Korea.
Before actually making statements about the Korean media, might I suggest first actually reading (and watching) the Korean media.
