October 9 reception with Kang Chol-hwan

(NOTE: Do not call Seoul Club about the event. They are just the host site and do not know any details about it. If you have any questions, email me at the link below.)

As one or two of you might know, in real life I am a member of Republicans Abroad-Korea. On October 9 we and Democrats Abroad-Korea are co-sponsoring a reception with Kang Chol-hwan:

The Korean chapters of Republicans Abroad and Democrats Abroad proudly sponsor a non-partisan reception and presentation with Kang Chol-hwan former North Korean political prisoner and author of The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag.

The reception will take place at Seoul Club on Sunday, October 9. Doors will open for the reception at 6:00 PM and the presentation will begin at 7:00 PM. Admission is 36,000 won. Food will be served.

If you haven’t heard of him, Kang is the defector who met with President Bush last June. He also recently met with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

If you are interested, email me to RSVP.

As an added bonus, you will get to see me MC the event (if I can get over this nasty cold in time).

UPDATE: We are booked out. If you haven’t RSVPed, don’t show up expecting to get in. PS, thanks to those who have already RSVPed.

I’ll be there. This is something I have really been wanting to be a part of.

I hope adequate steps have been taken to ensure Mr Kang’s safety. He’s in the crosshairs of not one, but two Korean governments.

Wow. Kudos for organizing this event. I’m on the wrong side of the pacific. :(

He did a tour of some American universities (sponsored by LiNK chapters). His first stop was here at Penn a few weeks ago. I liked his talk. It’s of course always a bit awkward when a talk consists of someone babbling off in non-English and then having to hear the translation in English. Regardless it was interesting and heartening to see people show up to see him.

And I got him to sign his book (conveniently for sale of course)

Will it be in English or Korean at the Seoul one?

The Seoul event will be in English. Of course, Kang will be speaking in Korean with English translation.

BTW, I am one of about a half-dozen people who are doing the bulk of the work on this thing. It is a group effort.

I’d love to RSVP, but your link opens an email program I can’t use, and the darned browser won’t let me see the email address.
So, in lieu of an e-mail, please count me in! I’ll be there early just in case.

I don’t think he’ll be letting people in at the door… but then again, i’m not sure.

    Andy?

The email address is andyinrok@lycos.com .

We had been taking a few pay-at-the-door RSVPs but we are now bumping up on room capacity (a good problem to have, I guess). We are going to set the final numbers with the host site at noon tomorrow.

Email me tomorrow morning and I’ll put you on the RSVP list. If there is any problem, I get back to you.

Folks who show up expecting to get in are basically out of luck.
