Remember the Dog Poop Girl? Well, one of the local papers reports that a similar incident has taken place in New York, where 22-year-old webdesigner Thao Nguyen used her Samsung P777 cell phone to, well:
Nguyen’s transformation from quiet Web developer to feisty crimefighter happened on an uptown R train the afternoon of Aug. 19.
She was on her way back to work after a job interview when a middle-aged, blond-haired man dressed in a black shirt and jeans sat down across from her.
“He kept staring at me,” she said. “I could feel his eyes on me. I wanted to avoid eye contact so I looked away, but I could see his reflection in the window.
“I saw him massaging himself and then he unzipped and pulled it out. I thought, ‘I can’t believe he’s doing this in the middle of the day!’ ”
The subway car was mostly empty and Nguyen felt nervous, so she pulled out her Samsung P777 cell phone, equipped with a 1.3 megapixel digital phone.
“I turned on the camera,” she said. “He was still masturbating. I aimed it and quickly took the shot. As soon as I took it, he zipped up and got off the train.”
Nguyen then reported the incident to police and posted the photo online. The wanker, restaurant owner Dan Hoyt, was quickly identified and arrested.
Needless to say, this sparked some degree of debate — as it did in Korea — as to whether this sort of justice was such a hot thing. Tama Leaver’s essay at Ponderance raised some very good issues.
Now, I hate to take this down a racial path, but the Dog Poop Girl wasn’t the only story previously posted on this blog that came to mind. I mean, we have creepy white dude with an Asian ex-wife (who posted his bail) allegedly wacking off in front of a young Asian woman… He had a prior conviction in ‘94 for public lewdness and had apparently flashed four other women between August and October. I haven’t seen any mention yet of the ethnicity of his other victims, but one certainly wonders.
CROSS-CULTURAL JOURNALISM NOTE: While the NY Daily News had no problem at all showing the face of the suspected wanker on its front page (via Boing Boing), the Chosun Ilbo (linked above) felt compelled to pixelate the face out. Kind of interesting, actually.

Regarding cultural differences, the Chosun article also mentioned the effect of a “Samsung Phone” in a subheading, something US and UK papers did not…
On the other hand, I blathered on a bit about this last week (someone on the original flickr page (now gone, but still cached) linked to me) and I mentioned the Samsung phone too, so I’m not really one to talk. Oh, and now that I think of it, the phone is mentioned at the top of this post too!
A quick search will turn up dozens of US blogs reporting on this. Beware of the (cached) flickr page though - other than reading her original post, there’s little point in wading through the comments, unless you reeeeally have nothing better to do.

Clearly it is wrong to launch baseless or distorted electronic smear campaigns against people.
In this case the girl did commit the offence in question. If the cyber ??attacks?? went beyond her actions on the train (like into her sex life) then she is a victim. If she just can not deal with people??s opinions about her action, she is the one with the problem. And I??m sure that the stories told of the incident and the aftermath with great accuracy and absolute objectivity.I??m not foolish enough to believe that, but that is all the info I have. If the info is wrong then my opinions could be wrong also.
The comment about Poop girl and the masturbator riding the same train was not meant to be taken literally.

Actually, I don’t think Dog poop girl deserved to be harrassed so much that she was forced to quit her school. What she did was incredibly rude and inconsiderate, but it pales in comparison to the amount of abuse that was hurled upon her, her (assumed) school, and possibly her family. This guy, on the other hand, does deserve the possibly 3 months of prison coming to him; considering his attitude, he likely could use more.
You wouldn’t want to eat at that dude’s restaurant.

From the stories I saw it seemed she was just as thin-skinned as she was rude and self-centered. If she acts like a witch she should not be mad when people call her a witch.
In a perfect world Dog Poop Girl would have been sitting across from Mr. Masturbator.

If she got kicked out or was coerced into leaving, this is an example of rule by e-mob. I think with the right approach dog poop girl could take her lemons and make lemonade. First, she should embrace her fate and legally change her name to “Dog Poop Girl”, since that’s what she’ll be known as for the rest of her life anyway. (?????…see? three characters). Print some official “Dog Poop Girl” t-shirts and set up a booth to “Have Your Photo Taken With Dog Poop Girl” (cellphone shots only, of course). Then she can develop her own “Dog Poop Girl” product line. “Dog Poop Girl” pooper scoopers, “Dog Poop Girl” poop disposal bags, “Dog Poop Girl” air freshener, etc. Hell, she could lead a wave of doggy cleanliness in Korea. Her slogan could be “Clean up your puppies poopies. There can only be one Dog Poop Girl…”. Who knows? If things really take off, she could start her own “Dog Poop Girl” line of cosmetics.
Of course, the point of all this is that I just like to write “Dog Poop Girl”.

I am afraid I have no sypathy for the dog dookie chic-getting kicked out of school for is a bit much but the puplic chastisement she recieved has been long over do. In my opinion it is a shame that this does not happen to more of those people who behave badly.
As for the handy man-he gets (hopefully) what he deserves. That behaviour is not something I can rationalize or condone. I would have been pleased to have read that the girl who used her phone to take a picture of the guy busted out a taser and nuked his ass mid stroke-right there on the subway. An acceptable substitute would have been for her to bust out the pepper spray and really make him cry. I sometimes wonder if one of the reasons that there are so many ills in society is that people are willing to ignore them as long as it doesn affect them. A little bit of public peer presure might have a nice effect on things.

It’s a frickin’ pile of pooh in a public place, nothing deserving of a life-altering change for the worse. It went beyond “a little bit” of public peer pressure.
Here’s hoping for your sake you don’t have an embarrassing moment with a bunch of cameras on you in a public place. And if you do, I hope people are a lot nicer to you than they have been to her.
