I must say enjoyed both comments about my article in “Kyoto Journal.” Unqualified thanks to the first commentator. Re the second, thanks for describing my article as “a good primer for further reading.” Well, that beats calling it “a bad primer.” Re your other comments, first I have NEVER passed myself off as an “expert” on Korea. I’m just a reporter, sometimes hitting the target, sometimes not. Re your other comments, thank you for your literary criticism. If you found the article “almost unreadable,” however, I do wonder how or why you read it and were able or moved to comment as you did. I also note your comment is anonymous — but then, that’s to be expected of one who would write such, well, tripe.

for years, kirk has written as though he has his finger on the pulse of the korean nation, passing himself off as an expert. he has good contacts here in the business and political communities that give him their opinions on what is going on but he merely regurgitates them with his own framing.

this article is, at best, a good primer for further reading to find out what’s really going on in korea. at worst, it is pretentious tripe that meanders from point to point, rendering it almost unreadable.
