An extremely kind (and apparently well-read) reader sent over some MUST READ links that I give you below. Be sure to read them ALL.
- Read through the latest edition of the The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis, published by the Defense Ministry-funded Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA). Featured in this month’s edition are pieces by Marcus Noland, Nicholas Eberstadt and a load of other folk who know a lot more than I do. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the link.
- Speaking of Nick Eberstadt, check out his essay on North Korea’s weapons quest over at the now non-Korea Foundation-funded AEI.
- And while your over at AEI, Dr. Norbert Vollertsen contributed a piece on the “depraved society we can’t ignore” in the June-July edition of American Enterprise. Nicholas Eberstadt, James R. Lilley, Daniel Kennelly, Gordon Cucullu and Victor Davis Hanson also ran a piece in the magazine on the North Korean nuclear issue that, given the names involved, I might consider selling my left nut to get a hold of.
- Be sure to check out “A Cold Peace: The Changing Security Equation in Northeast Asia,” (.pdf) by the Brookings Institute’s Tomohiko Taniguchi.

Must Reads From the Marmots Hole
An extremely kind (and apparently well-read) reader sent over some MUST READ links that I give you below. Be sure to read them ALL.
Read through the latest edition of the The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis, published by the Defense Ministry-…
As of now, this is going to lead to 5 different conversations mashed into one commends thread…can you cite each article in a different post?
Or perhaps get around to opening up a BBS forum?
wow… where is all this criticism about Marmot’s blog coming from these days? guys… if you don’t like the guest hosts here, if you don’t like the information here, or if you don’t like the way it is served to you here, go elsewhere.
don’t treat it like a f#$%ing entitlement.

don?t treat it like a f#$%ing entitlement. One could say the same about people who don’t like to see constructive advice.
Marmot is presumably trying to make his blog as good as it can be within the limitations he has. Janus’s advice might be the kind of thing he would want to hear as a suggestion.
You may not like how people have voiced their opinions about Shelton’s contributions, but I don’t think Janus has been a big part of that at all, if he/she has voiced any opinions at all.
A mild suggestion to not “shotgun” several items into one post hardly seems a reason to start yelling (f#$%ing).
It happens to be a constructive criticism I agree with. Up to the “proprietors” here of course, but if they want a shot at a coherent set of comments to accompany each item, this would seem to be a reasonable suggestion.
Especially considering that even with just one original item to discuss, these comments sections usually end up going on a tangent anyway.
You know, Paul, I hear what you’re saying and I had the words constructive criticism in my comment before deleting them in favour of something more snarly. If anyone is up for CC, after all, I’d have to say it’s marmot.
I guess I was just frustrated with all the griping of late. I mean.. the blog gets picked apart from all angles, particularly that it’s not serious enough. You could even sense a bit of frustration in marmot’s headline (if you’re inclined to read into it). And then, after posting some “serious” comment (which is what everyone was craving for, right?) he gets criticized for something else!
Janus wrote “or perhaps get around to opening up a BBS forum”. I think part of the problem here is that we have difficulty reading a poster’s true intent. To me, I took that comment as more of a complaint than a CC. And that kind’ve set me off.
And before I get too far off on a tangent… How’s NYC?
I published excerpts from the AEI issue here last week (except for Amb. Lilley and Eberstadt’s comments). I ran into Amb. Lilley himself two days ago, and he told me that the Koreans were quite upset about his “Dont coun’t on South Korea” comment. There’s a link to buy your own copy, if you want. No need to give up your left nut.
But when it comes to insider knowledge, most people might find this much more interesting. It’s pretty disturbing reading for those who don’t like the idea of foreign embassies flavoring our news.
Joshua — Thanks for posting that over at your blog. I’d be really keen on seeing Nelson’s report on its entirety.
I’m going through the report today and will likely publish much more of it later. However, Nelson, who appears to be a certifiable back-stabbing dick-head, wrote a lot of stuff about peoples’ religious preferences, personal relationships, health issues, and so on. I’m not going to publish that stuff and wouldn’t want anyone else to do so, either. As proof of the fact that we live in a partially just world, Nelson may also be getting a visit from the feds. (Disclaimer: I don’t know enough facts to assert that Nelson, who is not a registered agent of the ROK Embassy–yes, I have the list–was acting “subject to the direction or control” of the ROK Embassy.)
Check back later in the day; I have to do some work stuff (on my day off) first.

Is the power of Marmot approaching the power of Slashdot Effect?
Did we Marmot that site?
“Seeingetc…”:
“…the blog gets picked apart from all angles, particularly that it?s not serious enough….”
I don’t agree, but even if I concede the point it simply means that the Marmot has set up high expectations for himself. If they really didn’t like him they would stop visiting and then there would be no complaints, eh?
Sort of like the way ROK complains incessantly about the US (hey, and Canada too). A product of high expectations? I think so, and my response is “turn those binoculars on yourself, ROK (and you too, O Canada)”.
Can’t report on NYC, I’m here in Northern California. One of those beautiful sunshiny days that may be equalled (say, up in BC) but never surpassed. And, a little depressed by it, because there are some brave men in Afghanistan who will never see such a day again.
Beautiful sunshiny days my ass. All I see is clouds and fogs (I’m in the pennisular/Pacifica). No shark attack today, though.
I considered it a constructive suggestion.
No, I haven’t. I would like to comment more but I usually arrive late to the thread and there is already an overwhelming hodgepodge of comments with people responding to people 5 posts back and all sorts of stuff in between…
I think a less linear feedback system would be better.
Well it looks like I can’t work quotes. Never mind.
