In yet another sign of how Korea’s broadbroad Internet penetration is putting it at the forefront of the digital revolution, Internet Protocol Television, or IPTV, is set to begin here in September, the Chosen Ilbo reports.

September will see another step toward the much-touted convergence when digital TVs with a high speed Internet function are unveiled.

TV portal services allowing viewers to access the Internet on their TV are set to go into full swing in the second half of the year.

Consumers who do not want to buy a new TV set have to purchase and install a separate device in the form of an IP set-top box to surf the Internet.

[...]

The TV portal service enables viewers to enjoy the Internet, video-on-demand, music and 3-D games.

right, the “much-touted convergence.” can anyone explain the big whoop having a tv that connects to the internet instead of having a tv/computer screen connected to your computer? being from san francisco, i can remember the days when “gay” used to mean “happy” and “convergence” meant “increased stock price.” oops, i guess “gay” has always meant “gay” in sfo…sorry.

Didn’t magnavox come out with a product that allowed people to surf the net via their TVs about 7 years ago? Wasn’t it something of a flop? I am assuming it was or it would continue to be a big product today. I do not think this will be a big product because while people do watch TV on their computers, the Internet has become much more than just read and look like it used to be and unless TV sets start getting hard drives and CD rom drives for games, I do not see this product taking off as it is.

yeah, that’s right. even the best westerns have them in their hotel rooms now. england was one of the forerunners in set-top boxes years ago and their itv “walled gardens”. the yardstick to measure the iptv is whether you can actually play jeopardy through your tv while you’re watching it. if you can’t, who gives a crap?

Hang on… this article is not about IPTV. IPTV means television programming through a broadband internet connection. This article talks about a standard TV that also allows you to surf the web.
