Why car execs need to lay off the boilermakers

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

Hyundai is retreating from the best new car deal of the year: half price.

There was a catch, however: the deal was available only on the new Sonata sedan, to be officially released tomorrow, and only available to motoring journalists who were about to file their reports on the crucial model.

The strange - and it now seems, never to be repeated - offer came at the media launch for a Sonata sedan in Tasmania last week, when Australian boss, Bong Gou Lee, handed around drinks called depth-charges (a mix of beer and whisky) and addressed the 30 gathered motoring journalists.

Despite Mr Lee’s thick Korean accent, there was no doubt about the message: “Half price for journalists, tonight only.”

Read about the mess that followed on your own.

In other boilermaker-related news, GNP lawmaker and Marmot favorite Park Jin is apparently giving up the potent potable in an effort to get diesel.

Those tried and true Korean PR methods just don’t always translate overseas, but hey, at least whoring wasn’t part of it, was it? [Didn't do the registration to see the article.]

The second link doesn’t seem to be correct. It’s Korean, while it says Chosin Ilbo english when you mouse over it.

OK, now it says Korean. So I at least know that I won’t be able to read it.

it seems some enterprising geeks have set up the noreg/noreg account on most, if not all, online newspapers.

Ah, poktanju. I’ve seen a lot of perfectly good whiskey/scotch destroyed that way. Dropping a shot of Glenfiddich into OB Lager…it makes me want to cry.

Alcohol is the lubricant of business in Korea and other places. This Hyundai exec should be counted lucky he didn?€™t put his offer into contract for them. Some of the executives I work with have done that and when their staff find out, it is too late, the company must then perform according to the contract. I have come to the conclusion that the entourage that tends to accompany Korean execs are responsible for more than finding ramien noodles in the middle of the night-increasingly, they are being charged with keeping the execs foot out of his mouth before something like this can happen. On numerous occasions I have seen Korean execs including the CEO write checks their bodies cannot cash. In at least some of these cases, it was fortunate that someone was there to responsibly ?€œclarify?€? what the exec meant. Obviously in this case, that did not happen. While American executives are more often than not, I suspect, the model employees they should be, I do not think that this problem is one that they have to deal with very often. I suspect that the negative press that will result from this incident will bring about some less than favorable press for the new Sonata in Oz. Korea?€™s system of hiring executives based on loyal service and performance observed (and delivered by the people at the bottom of the totem pole) has, as I think this example illustrates, some serious flaws.
