Whle Pavel Litvinov was explaining why Gitmo is no gulag in an op-ed to the WaPo, he pointed out:
There is ample reason for Amnesty to be critical of certain U.S. actions. But by using hyperbole and muddling the difference between repressive regimes and the imperfections of democracy, Amnesty’s spokesmen put its authority at risk. U.S. human rights violations seem almost trifling in comparison with those committed by Cuba, South Korea, Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.
Woops! Wonder if the Korean embassy has caught on to the typo yet.

I don’t know if it was really a typo. Many Americans and Canadians have trouble distinguising the different situations in North Korea and South Korea. I once saw a local rally to help poor “starving South Korean kids in Seoul”, and they showed pictures of starving North Korean kids surrounded by South Korean flags, with a banner “stop human rights abuses in Korea”.

Dude, that’s fucked up. You slap any of them?
“You slap any of them?”
No (a well meaning rally with some mistaken impressions?). But thank god Korea information ministry that corrects “misinformation” about Korea overseas didn’t get hold of that one. There would have been hell to pay, if they ever did.
Marmot, I’m surprised you have not caught onto this story.

S.Korea is allowed to get away with this kind of stuff because lack of knowledge about Korea in the developed world which would have ridiculed and condemned this. Koreans need an external force to really make them reflect on what are being propagandized. It’s sad that many Koreans are unable to recognize what is wrong with this picture on their own. I would have loved to see this story plastered all over CNN, NY Times, LA Times, and BBC. But unfortunately, interest in Korea related subjects are not so high.
Marmot, I noticed this, too and remarked on it in my blog on the same day that you did:

Kimbob, I’m quite sure that this was a typo. Pavel Litvinov is a Russian who spent some time as a prisoner in a Soviet Gulag, and I can’t imagine that he would really mean “South” Korea.
Anyway, I contacted the Washington Post to inform them of the error . . . but have as yet received no reply.
