ROK Tech Firms Join DMB Goldrush in China

By SHELTON BUMGARNER
Marmot’s Hole Guest Blogger

Korean firms Samsung and LG have signed agreements with telecom companies in the People’s Republic of China to enter the emerging DMB market there.

Korea?????s two leading electronic firms on the same day signed memoranda of understanding with Chinese digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) companies. Samsung Electronics said it signed an MOU for cooperation in the terrestrial DMB sector with Beijing Yuelong Digital Broadcasting Media Technology on Wednesday at the request of the Chinese company, while LG Electronics exchanged a similar MOU with Guangdong Yue Guang DMB.

Some analysts interpret China?????s wooing of Korean DMB business as a positive sign for the chances of local technology in the world?????s most populous market, but others are wary saying China is trying to get the DMB technology for free.

A Chinese official involved in the signing said Korean companies would provide equipment needed for trial broadcasts in return for Chinese assurances of preferential rights to supply handsets in the future. However, it has not been decided yet whether China will select Korean-type DMB as the standard. The official added China was testing various foreign DMB technologies.

So one day Chinese people can also get their fill of “Friends” re-runs on the subway via their Korean-made handphone.

Or it’s possible that they’ll watch the Chinese equivalent of “Friends” using a Chinese-made handphone using Chinese-developed DMB technology stolen from Korean firms.

Note: The picture is not directly from the story, but was placed inside the quote box for obvious design reasons. It is unknown if this handphone is equipped with DMB technology.

I wish all you bastards hadn’t picked on the guy so much that he’s now constantly on the defensive. Yes, Shelton Bumgarner — or Sheldon Baumgartner, or whatever pseudonym-variant-of-the-day he’s using — has gotten off to a terrible start on the Marmot’s Hole. And yes, I, too, think he sucks (not being able to spell your own name the same way twice is part of it) and generally skip right over every stupid thing he writes. I had hoped that he would get better. But to have him preemptively looking for the vulnerable spot in every single little detail of what he’s doing (again, with the exception of spelling his own name the same way twice, it seems) means that it’s not going to happen. Thanks a bunch, Kushibo.

I don’t mind Shelton’s posts at all. More diversity here is a positive not a negative.

However, some of the criticism directed his way in the comments section has become, how should I put this… rather monotonous.

Thankfully, I’m not obliged to read comments if they don’t interest me.

Nor am I obliged to read all (or any) of Shelton’s posts (or Marmot’s). Nor is anyone. In fact, if you use a news aggregator to read this blog, nothing could be simpler than skipping a post. Just something to think about.

SHELTON BUMGARNER… do you spend all day thinking abuot how great korea is? I guess one thing is true about what koerans say about americans like you. You would be flipping burgers in your home town. I wonder with all the korean ass licking you do, does it get you anywhere? I mean you still work for a shitty little hogwon and have to go dutch with your mushroom of a girlfriend .. right?

The marmot likes you because he dreams of a day that his koeran masters will look down on him and make him king of all the hogwonies like you. What do you get from all the korean shit you eat?

It will be just a matter of time before China lifts everything Korea has, especially if you regard Korean companies’ lack of security against technological leaks. Not just Korea, virtually every developed country is being targeted by China’s economic spy agency.

Take Canada for instance. The National Post reports today that the Canadian government is taking some tough actions to scrutinize foreign investments. This is because it has come to attention that there are thousands of clandistine Chinese spies active in Canada, who are passing vital technological information to China. This is causing billions of dollars in economic damage to Canada with its vast resource based technologies in nuclear power plants, hydro power, steel, aerospace, and heavy machinery.

Canada has pointed to China as the worst offenders of epionage spies active.

So you?€™re saying he sucks?€? and it?€™s my fault he sucks?! Well that sure blew up in my face.

    This is a tough crowd.

Shelton sucks ass. But so do a lot of writers just getting started. Eating it on stage — but coming back fearless — is part of the development of a stand-up comic.

This guy is gun-shy now. When he preemptively offers defensive explanations of why the picture might be off just a bit, that’s your fault. To the extent that this defensiveness keeps him from getting better, that’s your fault.

Oh god. Shelton, post as frequently as you can. And tell’em to fuck off. I’m sure there are reasons why marmot asked you to post in his blog, and given that he managed to attract educated/interesting crowd to his blog, i’m sure the reasons are pretty decent.

    What’s DMB?

Btw, last time i was in Korea, i had a chat with a family friend (a close friend in my clan who works for the gov’t - i don’t know the whole story). From what I was told, folks (farmers) seem pretty resigned to the fact that chinese are gonna eat the whole lower-cost market. A merchant mentioned that, by selling Chinese produced goods, although the price is half that of Korean produced goods, the margin is twice the amount he would have made with Korean-produced good (farm and other produced goods).

    welcome to gloablization.

    troll,

just because marmot’s a great writer and smart kid on the block doesn’t necessarily mean he knows how to pick writers. with all the flack shelton’s gotten he should have been pulled already and someone else given a chance. but hey, not my blog.

By the way, I went on record suggesting Shelton might do better with these tech-related posts.

I think if one reviews what I wrote about him Shelton’s stuff, I have been very constructive in my criticisms. If he toggles between cockiness and defensiveness, that is something he had long before he came here.

And he is not merely getting started as a writer. He has had his own blog for some time.

I am honoured to have something named after me.

Kushibo, I understand your point of view, and yes, in some sense everything you’ve written could be construed as constructive, but quite frankly, a lot of it came across as just rather curmudgeonly.
