It's also possible that it was supposed to be written a certain way but they just made mistakes.

There are, in fact, a lot of mistakes with the NAKL system. Google "Suweon" or "Weonju," for example.

Kushibo, you are correct. In their 1939 RASKB paper, McCune and Reischauer give numerous examples of the representation of ?????´ ??œ??·, and following their pattern, ??“?°€??½ would indeed be romanized in their system as "chkkarak."

My secret is that when I'm not sure of a romanized spelling, I look it up in an old English-Korean dictionary I have that was written using the 1984 system. For "chopsticks," it gave "chtkarak" with a "t." Then again, while the 1984 system is similar to McCune-Reischauer, it is not identical.

Actually they write the second pronunciation as ??€??·?¹Œ??½ with the ??· under the ??€ (which I can't do cause my MS Korean IME won't let me and I'm too lazy to look up the Unicode for that syllable), even though ?…… is used in the ?‘œ?¤€ ?°œ??Œ?²? to represent the "t" final sound.

Not sure offhand about the original 1939 McCune-Reischauer system, but the 1984 South Korean system does not appear to have assimilated sai s(h)iot to the following consonant, even though in Korean, it is in fact assimilated.

Then again, is not the primary rule of McC.-R. (and certainly of the ALA-LC guidelines that are based on it) to reflect pronunciation above all else? Then yes, it should be chkkarak, although my Kug Sajn gives both ??€?¹Œ??½ and ??“?¹Œ??½ as acceptable pronunciations of ??“?°€??½.

Yes, that's my ugly mug.

I thought if I put a funny, ugly American picture of me up there someone would take pity on me and help me out.

I miss that shirt though, it was pretty cool.

Shelton, is that you in the tie-dyed shirt? Dude, you've got "expat" written all over you! But the picture of you with the ssam and the metal chtkarak makes up for it.

I know...but I want someone here in Korea I could call and say, "Hey, could you run over to X that's in the news and take a picture of Y?"

It could be months before I save up enough for my own digital camera.

But you have a point -- that would be nice to have ready access to some Korea-based stock photography.

you could use flickr (www.flickr.com) and blog pictures off of that. i usually blog my own photographs, but often get the blessing of other people (with awesome photographs) and use their photographs to illustrate my blog posts.
