I think it has become clear that NK does not enjoy the same amount of control over its borders that it used to. Granted, comparatively speaking, it is still more controlled than Pakistan but part of that may be contributed to the fact that NK has a shared border with only three countries: SK; Russia and China. The border with Russia is a mere sliver of land at best. The border with SK is one of the most heavily armed areas on the planet (including land mines-step on one of those and that would ruin your day real fast). The border with China is significant and it is guarded but given the only other option would be an attempted escape by sea and that is the only choice. How many N Koreans are estimated to be living in Northern China? I have read that it is at least in the tens of thousands with some estimates being over 100 thousand. Since a rambling lifestyle is not exactly looked upon in the workers paradise, the NK refugees secretly living in Northern China represent a significant number of people who were physically close enough to the border to effect an escape.

As for food-it is a matter of personal preference but given a choice, I would take Pakistani food I think. Although that possam kimchee-with the shrimp and chestnuts etc inside the head of kimchee (reputedly to be a North Korean tradition) is pretty damn good.

Kushibo, no I don't remember when North Korea practiced or appreciated diplomacy. What are the U.S.'s goals vis-a-vis the North? They seem to range from benign neglect to "Nuke em!," so that official's comment about Chad was rather realistic, all things considered, and funny.
