Yes, lightweight, automated trains are a distinctive technology, first developed in Canada in the 1980s. The Korean project is interesting because the vehicles are rubber-tired, kind of a cross between the Montreal and early Paris Metros (conventional heavy rail) and bus guideways, another emerging technology.
