Saw Sang-soo’s controversial film The President’s Last Bang on DVD the other night. If you can get your hands on it, do. In a very dark sort of way, it’s funny as hell, and Han Seok-gyu is, as always, solid gold. Definitely recommended for Korean film buffs and those with an interest in contemporary Korean history.

I copied rented it not too long ago but haven’t watched it yet. No time - too much time spent fishing, I guess.
Don’t know if you ever download from usenet, but there’s a group alt.binaries.dvd.asian where you can download an average of 2-3 Korean DVDs per week. This one was recently posted, as well as She’s on Duty, Red Eye, My Wife is a Gangster, Windstruck, and This Charming Girl (just to name a few). Have to build up my collection for that eventual return to the states…
Even considering Korean humor, with it’s ample allotment of physical abuse (the 3 Stooges died and went to Korea!), I’m not sure why this movie is considered a black comedy. Perhaps it’s called that to compensate for the lack of historical certainty.
But it is entertaining!
