(From May 18 Memorial Foundation)

May 19, 1980 (Monday. Rain from afternoon)

  • 3:00: 11th Paratrooper Battalion, sent as reinforcement, arrives at Gwangju Station.
  • 9:30: Citizens meet with merciless suppression on the part of the martial law army, set fire to Im-dong and Nu-mun-dong police boxes
  • 10:00: Citizens numbers gradually mount and engage in rock-throwing battle with paratroopers on Geumnam-no.
  • 14:40: Paratroopers who had been withdrawn from Chosun University are sent back on campus and begin unreasonably harsh crack down operations.
  • 15:00: City high officials and supporters meet and propose that suppression operations be relaxed
  • 16:30: Chosun University High School student Kim Yeong-chan is shot and wounded by martial law forces near Gyerim Police Box.
  • 18:00: Countless citizens chant “Down with Chun Doo-hwan!”

Of course, the Oranckay contributed a winner for 5.18 — read it.

I must agree with Oranckay completely: the Chosun Ilbo has never atoned for its support of past dictators or crimes against Korean citizens. They too need to reflect upon their own history, as well as Japan.

This daily diary is an incredibly powerful way to commemorate the 25h anniversary of this tragedy.

My hat’s off to you, Marmot-s??nsaengnim.

Thanks, Kushibo. Actually, I did this to commemorate 5.18 last year as well — I’m just copying the posts. I think a timeline does a better job of conveying the tragedy than some long-winded post. I lived a year in Gwangju for a year before coming up to Seoul — it’s a great city full of terrific people, and I guess this is my way of paying tribute to the city and the sacrifices made by its residents.
