“Unsettling” is not the word I would use…
Hey, don’t get me wrong:
I like women. I like naked women. But Bai Ling is a beautiful enough woman sans clothes without having to “over-exoticize” her with the Chinese cultural imagary.
Not that I have a problem mixing culture with porn — personally, I think the mixture of the hanboks, traditional Korean architecture and full frontal nudity in this spread, for example, is really well done:

But Bai Ling’s spread just seemed, well, culturally exploitive. Anyway, it just didn’t sit right with me for some reason.
In the interests of cultural research, I may have to investigate these articles…..

Is THAT why you found it unsettling? Because of the opium pipe and the tattoo? Maybe I’m missing something, but this girl seems a lot like a….guy. I found it unsettling because it’s a really hot girl…who’s a guy. Am I wrong? Is that not, in fact, a guy?
I am not upset by the pipe or the tattoo. I rather like it. I am upset by the cheekbones, the forehead, and the eyes, all of which say “Hi….I’m a man”. I find this particularly disturbing when juxtaposed with the smooth belly, perfect boobs, and perfect skin, all of which scream….”I am a girl…and a pretty damned hot one”.
Please let me know if Bai Ling is a guy. This seems to me to be a rather salient issue.
According to what has been written Bai Ling is bi-sexual and has had numerous affairs with men and women. Hopefully that answers our questions!
