Nathan on Uzbekistan

Nathan over at Registan.net is THE PLACE to look for news and analysis of recent events in Uzbekistan.

By an odd coincidence, the shit hit the fan soon after Korean President Roh Moo-hyun paid a state visit to Uzbekistan, coming away with deals for oil exploration and mineral exploitation. Like I said last year when President Roh visited Kazakhstan, as Korea’s influence grows, it will be interesting to see how Seoul seeks to reconcile its economic and strategic interests with the rather shady nature of some of its partners in the developing world.

Countries don’t get any shadier than Roh’s brotherly neighbors to the North.

Mmm; Seoul never has had any trouble reconciling its economic interests with the indubitably shady nature of thelarger part of its own entrepneurial elite. So what’s to worry?

Let’s be fair — Uzbekistan is a U.S. ally as well. Since we (at least we slavering American neoconservatives) think of ourselves as “white hats”, it seems like we ought to reduce our geopolitical dependence on shady characters.

Not only are there good chunk of Koreans there (thanks, Stallin), but they’ve got some to the best Mongol/Turkic culture there.

I’m your faithful slave, Sevara Nazarkhan! You my goddess.

I remember the first time I bought juice at XYZmart in Korea. I was shocked it didn’t come out to $10 per glass…

    Sperwer,

hahaha. I couldn’t let this comment slide, “Seoul never has had any trouble reconciling its economic interests with the indubitably shady nature of thelarger part of its own entrepneurial elite.”

While the statement is completely true, isn’t this true for any human organization? I couldn’t help replace “Seoul” for one moment with the “Bush family” in my head and read that sentence. Or if you prefer, you can also replace it with France/Russia (oil-for-cash scandals) and a whole slew of others.

Personally, I think the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld shouldn’t be blamed too much for the Saudi connection, just like Nixon should be applauded for opening up to China(Human Rights violater). In the same way, there might be something similiar going on with Noh and central asia.

It becomes a problem with NK, because it appears that they don’t change their behavior whether or not we open up to them.
