COMMENT CRACKDOWN
Firstly, let me say that I’m truly grateful to many of my commentors who take the time to contribute very insightful and thought-provoking comments on my humble weblog. I really am. As I’ve mentioned several times before, I’m simply grateful I have any readers at all.
That being said, I’m afraid to look in my comments section nowadays. There’s still a lot of good stuff being contributed, but there’s also a significant amount of mayhem going on, and it’s driving good posters away. It’s gotten to the point where guys like Plunge — who “discovered” this blog and has supported it from the time I was writing about sundae in Gwangju — is hesitant to post here, and I’ve felt compelled to apologize to a couple of bloggers on account of the behavior a number of commentors, both on my blog and on theirs. For Christ’s sake, I can’t even do a “feel-good” post without things turning into a kyopo-bash.
This blog is like an open house party. Everyone’s welcome to come in and enjoy themselves. Partake in the conversation if you wish. But if you come in and piss on my rug or start fights with the guests, I’m going to show you the door.
I don’t want to be a dick, and I’m busy enough as it is without having to play the role of discussion board monitor, but I have to insist on some degree of decorum. I don’t mind heated debate, but keep it on topic and refrain from personal attacks. I’m all for discussing sensitive, emotionally charged topics, but please, keep things at least marginally civil. Hate Koreans? Hate kyopos? Hate white folk? Seek counseling, try meditation, buy your own disk space and start a blog, but DON’T POST HERE.
Anyway, I’m not an overly sensitive sort, nor do I wish to play the role of PC police. I’ll tolerate a reasonable amount of nonsense in my comments section, but only up to a point. I have enough faith in humanity not to feel compelled to write up a clause-by-clause comment policy — as with life offline, the general rule is simply don’t be an asshat. I don’t pay monthly bandwidth fees to provide a forum for individuals to grind their racial/personal axes and scare away thoughtful contributors. Somebody noted in one of the threads that much like how bad money drives out good, bad commentors drive away the good ones. That’s happening here, and it ends now.
For the time being, I’ve implemented a login policy for comments. In terms of blocking potential trolls, this is about as useful as tits on a boar hog — anyone can register and begin posting immediately, and I haven’t found something akin to MT’s Typekey with which I can grant access to specific users only. I’m still examining other technical means to make comment moderation easier and more effective.
On a more positive note, I’ve finally managed to get my Trackback URL’s to appear, so trackback away.
CO-WRITERS
That brings me to my second order of business. While I enjoy reading my own tripe, Korea’s a busy place — lots of issues, lots of points of view. Anyway, if you’d like to write for the Marmot’s Hole — and I’m not entirely sure why you’d want to — shoot me an EMAIL at marmotshole@gmail.com (please, don’t inquire in the comments). I can’t tell you how I’ll make the selection, or how many, as I don’t know myself at the moment. Obviously, however, people I “know,” so to speak, like those with their own blogs or regular commentors, would be preferred.

sounds to me like you are lining yourself up for a media control position in one of our more leftwardly inclined neighbours. It is your blog and as you mentioned you pay the bills, but at the end of the day it will be worse off for any attempt to limit what is said. LONG LIVE CENSORSHIP AND THE OPPRESSION OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

I can’t agree. Go look at some of the vile things that were being said about some people because of what they posted. Nora, for one, was treated horribly. I hope she comes back, she had some good, well thought out things to say.
Good call, Robert. I kinda dropped under the radar when the comments here started to resemble LGF’s. Look forward to seeing a “return to old” in this regard. Speaking of the olden days, when can we expect another report on canine cuisine?
YES to that!
Amen to that. You’re the one paying the bills, so it’s up to you to lay down the house rules.
A body to die for?
You decide. The Marmot is slipping these days…I went over there to check if he found some
Glad to see you implement this, although it is sad that it had to happen.
good move
Unfortunate but necessary.
Good call - it had to happen.
It’s eerily quiet around here now Mr. Marmot. Apparently somebody took “Michael” already because I couldn’t register the name, so I’m not trying to do a “New York, New York” here, I’m just too unimaginative at the end of the workweek…. Anyway, thanks to you and a few other bloggers (Oranckay, Flyin’ Yangban, Party Pooper et al.) for keeping up on all the developments–one thing about living in Korea, it’s never dull
Thanks . . .
Michael Michael. Pizza Pizza.

Whew had a hard time logging in… My Yahoo Mail kept the password mail as spam! No wonder it wasn’t arriving on my Outlook. I was waiting for a couple of hours for the password to arrive. heh heh
Thanks, Juan.
I had the same problem with yahoo.com and, thanks to you, I got in.

Glad to see this issue raised. I recently posted twice on here for the first time, and both comments resulted in personal attacks from the same person, whom I am tempted to name, but instead will refrain from dragging myself down to her level. Pretty much put me off from coming back, but for some reason I did.
Robert, I doubt if you’d ever actually do this, or even need to, but if things became too tiresome you could create an offsite discussion board that linked back to your blog. That way, particularly opinionated types would have a place of their own. They could go at each other’s throats as much as they pleased without degrading the comment culture here. You could call it “The Marmot’s Pit” or “The Ssireum Ring” or something like that. Needless to say, the board wouldn’t be moderated.
Please don’t take that as a sincere suggestion, it’s not meant seriously…
Yeah Mr. Marmot, start a comment site and call it “Sockaholics Anonymous.”
One problem though. I get an annoying error message each time I post (the post does get posted except for the error message). I’m using Mozilla.
i’m new here and already put in a nice chunk of garbage posts, but i’m impressed with the type of people this site attracts - very articulate and seem to be well informed - and hope the new policy helps (note to myself: stop posting garbage to others’ blogs…)
Same here kimbob, but I’m using IE
“troll,” you should choose a new name. If you’re the same person who’s been posting under that name for a while, your comments have been distinctly un-trollish, as I recall. Self-deprecating humour is fineWoody Allen raised it to an art formbut no need to write yourself off with a name like that!
Yep, seeing troll’s comments’ untrollishness I was wondering if I had misunderstood the definition of “troll” in blogging
Curious juan: hehe, you just wait. i earn my moniker.
