What legitimate CPUs (something that you could run KDE/Gnome on) exist that are made by non-US corporations? I suppose Linux on the PS2 might work, but has anyone gotten a desktop environment running stably on that? Even the PS3 is going to use IBM’s CELL system based on POWER. I can’t think of anything.
KrZ: I believe the short answer is zero, but here’s my longer reply.
There are a number of processors made by Japanese companies such as Hitachi and Toshiba, but they are more the level of power needed for embedded systems or cell phones than PCs. I’m not aware of any remotely decent CPU made by any company not based in either the US or Japan.
Your best bet would be MIPS. As an open standard, anyone can manufacture a MIPS architecture chip without paying any royalties or asking any permission. MIPS has fallen by the wayside in recent years, but early versions of windows NT actually ran on it, and there are certainly MIPS compatible ports of Linux. There may not be any modern MIPS based desktop systems, but a company in China could surely design one if they were overcome by a burning desire to make a computer system with no legal or financial obligations to any foreign corporation.

Dell is a very conspicuous donator to and supporter of the Republican Party.
(Mac user here)
Dude! You’re getting a Dell!
BTW, the word is “donor”.
Uh, only after you pry my cold, dead, fingers from the mouse.
Thanks for the grammar fix, though, i forget sometimes
Only a dictator would use Windows. He probably spams through kornet as well.
Macs rule.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dear Leader switches to Lenovo soon.
Shouldn’t he be using Red Flag Linux?
Too funny!

We’re missing the important thing which is that those ‘Koreans’ are speaking with strong Russian accents. It’s a first for me.
I had trouble understanding the Korean spoken in the ad. Very choppy, horrible pronunciation.

OK, now that I have your attention: this is a very funny ad.
