Ye Olde Chosun pointed out Sunday that the “octopus scene” in Oldboy (apparently a favorite of the HID — see post below) seems to be leaving an impression on U.S. film critics. Actually, the reviews of the film the Chosun quotes — from the WaPo, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle and San Diego Union-Tribune — were generally quite positive, as were the multitude of reviews linked to Rotten Tomatoes. This is good, of course, both for director Park Chan-wook personally and Korean film in general.

we’re not taking your flame-retardant bait, marmot. give us something nationalistic, racist, or salacious or else we won’t post.
starting with the end of this post.
No lesbians = bad cinema.
Anyway, “Oldboy” is just plain a bad film that is inexplicably overrated by the wannabe hipsters — this has nothing to do with the inclusion of any “octopus scene”.
I sort of agree with dogbert’s sentiments. I didn’t enjoy oldboy that much and in my opinion is a somewhat mid tier from the Korean films I’ve viewed. Better than the myriad of crappy romantic comedies, but not as good as saym Saving Private Kim (Taegukki) or Friend.
I will however disagree with nora. As initially interesting as those phyric 100+ comment posts are, they eventually become a choir and an irritant to read all of the responses. I rather enjoy the offbeat posts. It keeps things lively and readers in a less agitated state.
p.s. Knowing how many readers you do get Marmot, I’m going to take this opportunity to pimp my new blog before I go to bed, created as of last evening. I’m looking forward to all the reflected glory (i.e. Link traffic) that I can bask in from your blog.
BTW what’s phyric? Do you mean pyrrhic, as in “pyrrhic victory,” or “pyro” as in “flame fest”?
I actually enjoy the lengthy comment flames, but then I just recently discovered Net Newswire for Macintosh. They are a pain to load in the browser though.
well, for the record, i was being sarcastic.
Keep in mind it’s a slow movie time, hence the bandwidth given to “Oldboy”. Frankly*, “Sin City” might be more entertaining, overall.
And isn’t “Oldboy” *roughly* the same story as the last Jet Li movie to come out?
* - No pun intended (^_^)
The Village Voice (which gave “Old Boy” a decent review) slagged on Rex Reed: http://www.villagevoice.com/fi.....15,20.html
The writers’ surnames are Park and Lim, so maybe have a vested intrest here, but Reed is a wanker after all….
are you telling me none of you have ever eaten a live ocotpus? none of you would survive down here in busan! ^^
I don’t know what the big deal is about live ocotpus, besides that it is a living thing going down. At least you know its freshness. Unless it has hot pepper paste on it, it is pretty bland.
Yeah sorry about that, horrible mispelling brought upon by a case of the late night munchies.

is this review of the review for real? i mean, it’s just too overboard to be real. at least with ‘old boy’ it sort of had a connection, but these others. come on, this is a joke, right?
if he really wrote these things, then the guy is just tired and needs to be put out to pasture.
Nora, I’m fairly certain they wrote those Reed “quotes” as a pastiche to mock him, and it was a sendup of pruneface’s style.
Yes, wasn’t the original review of Oldboy by Rex Reed posted here by Marmot a few weeks ago?
Octopus worked? Next time, let’s try a dog.
violence, sex and ????? sells.
Octopus is just a candy to American movie audience who are used to human cannibalism. Have seen “Sweeney Todd”,”Little shop of Horrors” or “Eating Raul”?
The movie, Eating Raul even combined cannibalism with eroticism. You f** and eat him. What more can you do with a human being?
I love eating live octopus! Especially after you cut it all up and the individual pieces are still wiggling!… MMmmmm….. after you dip it in that special ko chu jang sauce! Americans shouldn’t yuck it till they have tried it!
Hmmm…just think of the rave reviews if they had seen this live octopus swallowed and then regurgitated.
I’ve never been tempted to eat a live octopus, although if others want to, they should feel free to follow the impulse. But aren’t there a few people who choke and die on those things? (Revenge of the small, 8-legged creature) I guess they aren’t chewed first.
Jodi, I used to eat a live octopus in my hometown Busan. Actually, it’s quite delicious. It isn’t usually big though. The live octopus in the movie is too big to eat. Hey, wangkon936, it’s better with sesame oil and salt. Everybody should try a tiny live octopus in Busan!
absolutely no sale. wanna introduce a recipe for a odorless (less odor) kimchee or kimchi on my site. thanks!
