Baduk,

At the risk of sending these threads further out into the stratosphere: Kim Il-sung was a Captain, not a lieutenant, in the Soviet Army. He commanded a battalion within the 88th Independent Infantry Brigade. He was not a "soviet" Korean in the sense generally used, as that is reserved for ethnic Koreans from the Soviet Army who were sent in to help the DPRK get off the ground. Neither was he with the "Yunan" faction, such as Mu Chong, who had fought with Mao Zhedong. Nor was he one of the home grown Communists such as Pak Hyon-yong (sp?)who had been operating in Korea. He was one of six Koreans who chose and used the nomme de guerre of Kim Il-sung, and yes, he did consolidate the accomplishments of some of those into his own rewritten history. His clique, however, is generally referred to as the "Gapsan" click in recognition of their origins within that area as part of the Anti-Japanese United Army, which was a Chinese resistance group with some Korean representation. THe Soviets threw Kim Il-sung into prison when he evaded into the Soviet Union sometime around March 1941, but with their subsequent non-aggression pact with Japan was signed, they needed a cross-border reconnaissance force capable of checking on the Japanese, and thus the 88th "Sniper" Bde. As a "battalion" commander, Kim Il-sung would have been responsible for training, launching, sustaining, recovering, and debriefing the small recon teams that were used to track japanese activity. He is reported to have participated in several such operations himself, which is likely. His effectiveness as a strategic reconnaissance commander can probably be judged in the capabilities of the present-day reconnaissance bureau. His brilliance as both a conventional field commander and guerrilla can probably be judged from the debacle inflicted upon the KPA after Incheon, and the fact that the most effective NORK guerrillas were those trained in Pak's "institute", or who had received their guerrilla warfare experience with the Chinese. Once the war was underway, he took steps to purge those factions he deemed a threat to his control, and this included the home grown communists (generally shot), the Chinese affiliated communists (usually shot, sometimes exiled), and the Soviet Koreans (sent back to the USSR for retirement). With the coast clear, he undertook to rewrite the history of the resistance with, of course, himself in the starring role. After the "Gapsan" clique screwed up the 1968 infiltations, they too were purged, but by being shuffled off to meaningless jobs.

June,

This is what happened in NK in 1945. There were commies from Manchuria, commies from NK, commies from SK and commies from USSR. Kim IlSung was a commie from USSR(he was a lieutenant in the Soviet Army. He has stolen the name.). All other commies were either eliminate or imprisoned. Only the faction from the USSR survived, to form a NK communist party.

Do you believe you are a Uri? You are not. True Uri party members come from former student commies, who served prison sentences. And, you have studied in the U.S. This totally disqualifies you from Uri crowd.

Besides Uris are xenophobic. Uris are stupid country bumpkins who have never set foot outside of Korea. They do not speak English well. They hate anyone who does. Therefore, Uris will hate you.

Denounce stupid Uris and join anti-Uri crowd like myself.

"By pro-American Koreans the president meant Koreans who are fluent in English and studied in the United States.??

I'm just curious, is there any attribution, esp. in Korean for construing this for certain as jealous resentment against English speakers? I don't really trust that some anonymous source paraphrased by a Korean newspaper is going to be reliable.

I don't deny that Roh is deluded and fucked up beyond all comprehension, but i still think "communist," doesn't quite fit; there's been no talk of collectivising agriculture or raising steel production quotas in the classic Communist style. To me at least, "left-leaning" doesn't work either, as I've never heard him express much sympathy for women's rights, environmental protection, or foreign guest workers, let alone the human rights of those in the North. I think of him as more of a demagogue than anything else, bent on exercising vengeance on his enemies rather than doing anything constructive in his role as president.

"Any Korean who speaks fluent English is an enemy of Korean state. Your neighbors will report you to the police. And, the Korean Central Intelligence Agency(KCIA) will keep a list of English-fluent Koreans for possible spy activities.

Me No speak No English. Me no nothing. Me poor, uneducated Korean. Me went no America. Me no nothing.

Start practicing. You and your family??s lives depend on it.

we americans me very very f-anny...you know? very face-tious humor...and i agree cuz i know KCIA does keep tab on college students (and have been for a long time) even the oversea ones who are actively involved in unification issues. there are many left-leaning organizations who see reunification not as communism/democracy issue but as nationalization agenda of the korea peninsula...in the meantime, uncle sam would like to keep a tab on me cuz i like to smoke weed...how facking facetious is that shit? even for those poor Korean bastards drowning themselves in soju, never having smoked fine green in their lives...fack the facetious fascists...

Ok Baduk, it does seem like an idiotic follow up by the presidential spokesperson who "explained that by pro-American Koreans the president meant Koreans who are fluent in English and studied in the United States." I think you're taking it too far....no, I'm sure you're taking it too far but what are they trying to do when they make statements like that?

Read today's opinion from Chosun daily,
<a href="http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200504/200504190036.html" rel="nofollow">http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200504/200504190036.html</a>

Rho's government officially declared the enemies of the state. They are 1) educated in the U.S. 2) Speak fluent English and 3)intellectuals or scholars. Rho wants to start a "Cultural Revolution" that happened in China in 1960s.

Death with all intellectuals!

Now, do you agree with me that Rho is a commie.

?橫By pro-American Koreans the president meant Koreans who are fluent in English and studied in the United States.??

-- That's me! I am not quite sure what President was trying to say by that though. People here often accuse me of a member of Uri party (which I hardly know about), so I am not definitely pro-American. I am not in favor of anti-Americanism either, which encourages bigotry and intolerance. Well, thanks to Roh, I suddenly become pro-American Korean.. Life is funny...

Thanks for the info, though I do think "commie" is probably not the best way of putting things. "Stupid," "reactionary," or "delusional" will do.
