Seoul, Ulan Baatar strengthen ties

On a happier Mongolian note, Korea and Mongolia have agreed to boost ties.

I have a random question for the Marm.

Do you, at home, eat “american” food with Mrs. Marm or a mixture of “american” “mongol” and “korean?” Are you finding that your meat intake has shrunk living in Korea or finding that it has risen married to a Mongolian? Inquiring minds inquire.

Oh… OH… I got a follow up random question. What “indigenous” korean snacks are the expats eating? (i’m not talking just stuff like yuts but stuff like “saeoo ggang”.) Anyone addicted to “Homerun-Balls?”

Stronger ties with Mongolia directly means stronger ties to North Korea indirectly. Mongolia is a major partner for laundering North Korean counterfeit currency, drugs, and (possibly) human traffic.

The Korea Times article cited states the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Minifat, Newspeak) as proponent for this; however, the whole thing reeks of Ministry of Unification (Minifiction, Newspeak).

I’ll take the opposite position of Mark here and note that this comes at a time when Mongolia is trying to get out from under Russia and China’s shadow by forging ties with the United States, so I wonder whether South Korea, which is cozying up to the PRC, will try and encourage Mongolian movement in the other direction.

Mongolia is probably the best example in the world of a country peacefully converting from communism to capitalism. More SK-Mongolian ties (and there are already plenty… just go to the South Korean movie theater in UB and order some cuttlefish if you doubt it) mean some positive relations with NK, at least potentially. It is all good.
