Unification Minister tells Rep. Hyde to bugger off

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young has turned down Rep. Henry Hyde’s demand that Korea name its “main enemy.” I agree with must of Chung’s reasoning, but this line is bound to raise some eyebrows:

Chung retorted that to call for Korea to first designate an enemy before it receives U.S. help is a misunderstanding of the object and spirit of the alliance. He said no nation in the world, the U.S. included, designates enemies in its defense ministry white papers. He added there was no change in Seoul’s position that the U.S. is an ally and North Korea an ethnic brother.

Meanwhile, the Unification Ministry is suggesting that tours of the North’s Kumgang Mountains may improve South Korean students’ image of North Korea. Seriously, there are times when I’m simply at a loss for words.

personally I like the ?橫prop-up the north minister?? title. It’s far kinder than I would give him.

My understanding is that Hyede’s statement was to the effect that IF you expect 700,000 of our troops to come to your aid, be CLEAR who your friends are and who your enemies are. This administration is trying too hard to walk the tight rope.

Chung has outdone himself. Of course his job description includes “Unification” in it, but under what system? He’s got to remember that, if it wasn’t for the U.S. he wouldn’t even have a job!
And, this is another piece of evidence as to the anti-American environment that is prevelant in the Blue House and Roh’s administration.

well this is quite funny when they bitch about troops leaving

as i said before on the herald forum it was rumored ROK commanders on the DMZ saying in the event of war they might not be able to order their troops to kill their brothers from the north

since then ROK troops have taken over control of the Joint Security Area
    see the trend happening here?

But of course the tours will increase students’ image of North Korea. These students will become the future Hanchongnyun, and then future Chong Dong-Yungs, and hopefully (if Minifiction gets its wish) future ethnic Comrades! Minifiction…steps closer to 1984…who is the enemy?

The ironic part of it is that the “unification” minister isn’t really there to promote unification, he’s there to defend and prop-up the north through “unification” projects like the industrial zone. but i guess if they changed the name to “prop-up the north minister” then some south koreans might actually have to realise that the whole unification rhetoric is crap………although somehow i feel that even if they changed the name the south koreans would still manage to delude themselves.

McNut–kind of sad, isn’t it, because the N.K. army won’t hesitate to kill their ROK “brothers.”

From what I have observed many South Korean students already think North Korea is a workers paradise- straight from their Teachers’ Professors’ mouths. No need to improve upon an already spotless image by many students.

Just when you thought Chung couldn’t jam that foot up into his mouth anymore- he swallows his ankle.

non korean I am currently attending a very good University in Korea (I know it sounds like an oxymoron :-) leave it at that). You said “many South Korean students already think North Korea is a workers paradise- straight from their Teachers?? Professors?? mouths.” I don’t know what constitutes “many” for you, but by my observations they aren’t that many of the type you mention. I don’t know about the ’80s and the ’90s but these days the number has definitely shrunk. Most Koreans (including students) know about the problems up in N.K. You should be stupid if you don’t, and I know that most of the Korean students aren’t stupid. YES, the student of the type you mention do exist, but believe me they are the minority. I am looking from inside in. I walk among these students daily, chat with them, eat with them, and party with them. From the outside I know the radical students seem large, but that’s only because they are usually the loudest and perform stunts that gets the media attention. My personal thought on mosk Korean students: They are one of the most calculating bunch. (I’ve lived in quite a few countries) These days the freshmen are so bad, they start to get ready for jobs from the first day of Univ! (I thought freshmen were supposed to party :-(

Modern Korean students are realists and they shun actions that either smell of rabid-idealism or over the top type of action.
Someone mentioned how an ajumma over-reacted by cutting her finger off and shook their head at how ridiculous it was. Well, most Korean students who saw it had mixed feeling too. They though it was ridiculously over-the-top, and knew that the reaction was not going to be viewed favorably in the interntional arena. These Korean students aren’t stupid as much of you try to make them. (Hey just because they stutter or speak in really simple and fragmented sentences or blush when speaking to you in English, does not make them intelligently inferior.)
Sorry guys/gals, I just got worked up. That was pretty personal ‘cuz I am attending a Korean U. Hope y’all understand :-)

Juan. You are right many of the most vocal students do make it seem like many more students are radical- most are not. They just want to party and get a job later. Although the Freshmen I taught still know how to party:) What I should have said was all students or almost all students get a good amount of “workers paradise” propaganda and more than a small minority believe it. It sickens me that it is even in the Middle schools. I expect it in college- time for experimenting with everything and all, but not in the Middle Schools.
