Norimitsu Onishi has a piece in the IHT on Korean anger toward Japan. It’s a good read, so check it out. Here’s part of it:
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reacted by saying that Roh “must be thinking of his domestic situation as well as friendship with Japan.”
Other politicians and most media picked up on the line, saying that Roh was simply pandering to South Korean nationalism.
What they chose not to mention is that Roh’s comments simply reflected the opinions of most people on the Korean Peninsula.
The Japanese responded especially angrily to his tying the issue of the Japanese abductees to imperial Japan’s mistreatment of hundreds of thousands of Koreans.
Had the Japanese seen through their anger, they would have seen that their neighbors view their focus on the dozen abductees as a case of offensive solipsism.
Indeed, everything is relative and nothing has been forgotten in this corner of the world - especially not this year, the 100th anniversary of the start of Japan’s de facto rule over the Korean Peninsula and the 60th anniversary of its end.
Now, I disagree with the writer here in that I would argue that everything is selective and a lot gets forgotten (on Liberation Day, see if President Roh actually mentions which nations did the liberating), and this is a phenomenon in no way limited to this corner of the world (see the post after this).
