i thought old boy was one of the more psychotic movies i've seen but in a good way. the storyline makes you think about how strong a feeling revenge really is. the sick twist in the end did make my stomach churn a bit though

What's with this movie? Directing is great, but it wasn't worth all this... Strange how people just pick something to latch on to and run with it. Seems like strange irony that Korean film will become famous by showing all the blood and gore that other people would just rather not see - most Koreans I know included. I LOVE Jet Li's Hong Kong movies, but can't stand the ones he made in America for the same reason...for me it's just more fun to see a guy flying away flailing his arms like an idiot than to see a man's blood come out his eyes as his heart explodes. If you wanna see that stuff, go to a hospital in Haiti - you can see people with holes in their body down to the bone eaten away by bacteria...you won't get the smell out of your nose for weeks. Can Old Boy do that??

A quick browsing of the top 250 list shows that movie connoisseurs as a whole have no taste. A more critical analysis shows 3 recurring trends. There are too many geeks voting for LotR over at imdb. Akira Kurasawa is the most (over)represented director. The internet is crawling with degenerate anime otakus. The top 250 films at imdb are not categorized by any recognizeable pattern, but rather by a mishmash of qualifications. Some are ranked by commercial success, others on American pop-culture impact, others on fanboy boosterism, and of course artistic merits.

Yeah, I'm sure you skinheads didn't have anything to do with the Fight Club being #37. Is that a 14 c. gold ring on your nose?

nah, who'd be childish enough to vote en masse for a movie just because it comes from "your" country. i'm personally going to try to vote it out of the top 100 just for kicks.

"ANy idea if there was an organized effort by Korean netizens to bump ?橫their?? move up by voting again and again?"

To quote the eloquent Mike Tyson, "That's ludicrous!" I'm shocked you'd even entertain the idea and don't know why you thought of it in the first place.

And in a related story, Professor Hanh Sung-jo pointed out Monday that "Seven Samurai" is ranked number 5 on the same list.
