DJ talks to the Chosun

Former President Kim Dae-jung was kind enough to give an interview with Ye Olde Chosun today. I couldn’t say it made for the most exhilarating read, and the actual Korean-language interview was much longer, but what stood out was his belief that ultimately, the North Korean nuclear issue was one that needed to be resolved between the U.S. and North Korea, with the other parties in the six-party talks setting the mood. Makes me wonder whether DJ actually believes Seoul has an interest in nonproliferation and a nuke-free Korean Peninsula, and why he believes the U.S. should care about North Korean nukes if he himself feels the issue isn’t important enough to South Korea for it to take a leading role in resolving it. I mean, he does mention that North Korea shouldn’t be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, but then why make the issue seem like a bilateral one between Washington and Pyongyang?

I remember reading somewhere that North Korea cares nothing for dealing with South Korea on nuke issues, since it is through compromise with the US and not South Korea that they can get what they want. If this is true, Noh is probably well aware of the situation and thus would rather keep quiet about it and not make things any worse.

DJ’s line stating how the Nuclear weapons issue should be resolved between the US and NK sounds very similar to that of the NK position. I would bet all the money I have (which isn’t much) that SK would want to be involved in the talks if NK wanted SK to be involved in the talks and then accuse the US of being unilateral if the US wanted one on one talks between the US and NK.

What exactly does he mean by other nations should be “setting the mood”? Does he mean that the other countries should tell the US what they want to get out of the negotiations but not be a part of the negotiations? I am just shocked that SK would want the US to negotiate something for them without them being directly involved in the process. Under any other circumstance SK would fight tooth and nail to be part of any process concerning their interests (understandably so).
I can only come up with 3 possibilities for this thinking strange way of thinking by DJ as well as the current administration
    1) SK (DJ/Roh) is/are just the lackey(s) of NK
    2) SK just wants the opposite of whatever the US wants. Or a type of the grass is always greener syndrome
    3) SK actually feels that this issue does not concern them at all -as mentioned my the marmot.

I’ve heard a lot of young Koreans say that they want NK to keep the nukes and want SK to get ‘em too. Not an official stance, but I’d be willing to bet there’s enough new wave, world-cup united Koreans that think that way to make a little impression on the gov’t.
